Russell Crowe is an Academy Award-winning actor known for popular films like Gladiator, The Nice Guys, Master and Commander, and American Gangster. Like any actor with a long career, not all of his movies have been hits. One example is Noah, director Darren Aronofsky’s take on the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. While the film earned $359.2 million worldwide, it received very mixed reactions from audiences and critics. However, Noah is currently gaining popularity again thanks to streaming services.
From February 9th to 15th, the movie Noah was the seventh most popular film on Netflix worldwide, racking up 3.6 million views and a total of 8.3 million hours watched. It performed better than films like Twisters and Homefront, earning its spot in the top 10. This marks the sixth week overall that Noah has appeared on Netflix’s top 10 list. A few years ago, the film also became a surprise hit on Netflix in the United States, something actor Russell Crowe didn’t anticipate.
Why Noah Is a Streaming Hit on Netflix

It’s interesting to see the movie Noah climbing the Netflix charts again, and there are a few reasons why. Noah is the kind of film that often performs well on streaming platforms. When it was released in 2014, critics generally liked it (giving it a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences weren’t as impressed (with a 41% audience score). This mixed reaction likely kept some people from seeing it in theaters, as they weren’t sure it was worth the money and effort. Now that it’s available on Netflix, those same people can easily check it out.
It’s been some time since the movie Noah was a major topic of conversation, but many film fans probably recall the debates it sparked when it first came out. Noah faced several controversies, including criticism about the lack of diversity in its cast and how it portrayed the biblical story. Often, when a movie is so controversial, it actually makes people more interested in seeing it – just to form their own opinions and understand what all the fuss is about. Instead of reading what others think, some viewers prefer to decide for themselves.
Although Russell Crowe isn’t the huge box office star he once was, he continues to work steadily in film. His recent appearance in the historical thriller Nuremberg has been particularly successful on demand, currently ranking eighth on Apple’s charts. Viewers who enjoyed Nuremberg might then explore more of Crowe’s work, potentially discovering the film Noah on Netflix. While Noah isn’t necessarily the first movie people think of when considering Crowe’s career, its current popularity on streaming is understandable.
Despite dividing audiences, Noah is a visually impressive film with a grand, epic scope. Director Darren Aronofsky truly delivers on the scale of the biblical story, creating an immersive and sweeping experience. It feels reminiscent of classic Hollywood epics, but made with today’s filmmaking technology. If you want to showcase what your home theater can do, Noah is definitely worth watching for its incredible visuals and impressive sets.
The movie Noah is currently available on Netflix, but only outside of the United States. U.S. viewers can watch it on MGM+ and Paramount+, or rent or buy it through digital platforms.
