When it comes to zombie shows, nothing quite matches The Walking Dead. Despite any criticism it receives, the series stands out for its realistic and often disturbing portrayal of a world after a disaster, where humanity is struggling to survive. At its core, it’s a story about people overcoming incredible challenges and battling their own inner struggles to live.
Ten years ago, The Walking Dead aired what many consider its greatest episode. “No Way Out,” which first appeared in February 2016 as the midseason premiere of Season 6, was based on a storyline from Robert Kirkman’s original graphic novels. In just over forty minutes, the episode delivered some of the most intense and shocking scenes ever seen in a zombie story, and it remains a highlight of the entire series even today.
“No Way Out” Is the Greatest Episode of Zombie Television Ever Made
“No Way Out” is the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead‘s sixth season, and it’s a truly intense episode. After the walls of the Alexandria Safe Zone fall, the residents are thrown into a desperate fight for survival. Both those trapped inside and the scouting teams trying to return face constant danger, where a single wrong move could be fatal. This creates a relentlessly stressful situation, making it one of the show’s most harrowing—but surprisingly hopeful—episodes to date.
A particularly memorable scene from “No Way Out” involves Rick and a group of survivors attempting to move through a horde of zombies by disguising themselves with walker remains. Their plan is derailed when Sam Anderson, the youngest member of the group, becomes overwhelmed with fear, attracting the zombies. His mother, Jessie, refuses to abandon him and is killed alongside him. Devastated, Jessie’s son, Ron, blames Rick for their deaths, and Michonne is forced to kill him to protect the others.
To make matters even worse, Ron manages to fire a shot before he dies, tragically blinding Carl Grimes in one eye. This devastating event brings the battle in Alexandria to a critical point. Rick’s bravery motivates the other residents, many of whom are inexperienced fighters, to join the fight and reclaim their home. Just when they need it most, Daryl, Sasha, Abraham, Glenn, and Enid arrive, clearing out the remaining zombies and providing crucial support.
“No Way Out” delivers everything fans love about the series – especially its ability to swing between intense despair and surprising hope. The episode features heartbreaking losses alongside inspiring moments of resilience, and characters finding inner strength amidst devastating events. It’s a truly exceptional and complete installment.
The Walking Dead Still Hasn’t Topped “No Way Out”
Even after ten years, the episode “No Way Out” remains the best example of what makes The Walking Dead great. It’s considered a perfect episode by many and currently shares the highest IMDb rating – 9.6/10 – with “Too Far Gone” and “No Sanctuary” from earlier seasons.
Though there have been several attempts since the acclaimed “No Way Out” episode, none have reached the same level of quality. The show’s quality noticeably declined during seasons seven and eight, and it never fully rebounded. While enjoyable moments still occur, they don’t quite compare to the impact of “No Way Out.”
While The Walking Dead has launched several spinoffs, none have quite lived up to the success of the original series. Shows like Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond attempted to replicate the original’s formula but ultimately felt overshadowed. These spinoffs often had trouble engaging viewers due to shorter seasons with limited episodes. The Ones Who Live is the closest any of them have come to matching the quality of the original, but even it doesn’t quite reach iconic moments like the “No Way Out” episode.
Around ten years ago, The Walking Dead reached its best point with an incredible episode that perfectly captured what made the show so popular. Although there have been several spin-offs, none have managed to recreate the impact of that episode – and it’s unlikely they ever will.
