As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve always felt it was more than just movies. It’s fascinating to remember the first novel came out before the original film even hit theaters! And then there were the early expanded universe books, like Alan Dean Foster’s Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, way back in 1978 – years before The Empire Strikes Back. But lately, it feels like Star Wars is really becoming something different. With all the Disney+ shows, the story is expanding in incredible ways, and it’s cool that the next movie is actually building on what we’ve seen in those series.
In 2022, Lucasfilm released the novel Brotherhood by Mike Chen, a story set during the early Clone Wars. It’s widely considered one of the best Star Wars books ever written, focusing on the bond between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. The novel includes a subplot featuring Mill Alibeth, a young Jedi with a rare ability to feel the pain of others – a challenging gift during wartime – and who seems to hint at the future character of Ahsoka Tano. Recently, Lucasfilm unexpectedly published a sequel to Brotherhood.
Mill Alibeth’s Story Continues in a New Star Wars Book

Mike Chen’s new book, Low Red Moon, serves as a prequel to the Star Wars: Outlaws game, revealing the history of Jaylen Vrax and his droid companion, ND-5. It’s a compelling and well-written story that delves deeply into its characters. The narrative begins shortly after the events of Revenge of the Sith and then jumps forward nine years, focusing on Jaylen’s pursuit of vengeance for his family’s deaths. Unexpectedly, the book also continues the story from Brotherhood with the return of Mill Alibeth.
We already knew Mill had survived the devastating Order 66 and ended up navigating the criminal side of the Star Wars galaxy. However, we were surprised to see her story officially become part of the established Star Wars timeline. Jaylen joins forces with Mill and another young Jedi survivor named Vivert Stag. This development adds a new layer to Anakin Skywalker’s story during the dark times following the Clone Wars, as Mill still relies on the lessons he taught her. Although Anakin isn’t directly mentioned, Mill’s use of his teachings demonstrates how deeply he influenced her life.
Readers who loved Star Wars: Outlaws will likely enjoy Low Red Moon, but it offers even more depth. The story feels like a strong introduction to a potential new series centered around the compelling characters of Mill and Vevert. Author Chen has crafted a fantastic narrative, carefully ensuring it’s a complete and satisfying story even though it serves as a prequel. It’s a must-read for fans of the genre.
Low Red Moon is on sale now from retailers like Amazon.
