More than 25 years after it came out in 2000, American Psycho has become a lasting fan favorite. The film follows Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), a self-absorbed Wall Street banker who commits a series of murders, and it sharply criticizes harmful ideas about masculinity, the excesses of big business, and unrestrained capitalism. These issues are still relevant today, which is why the movie continues to be quoted and shared online as memes.
Despite debate over whether it’s necessary, a remake of American Psycho is in the works with director Luca Guadagnino at the helm. However, he’s currently struggling to find the right actor to play the lead role. According to Bret Easton Ellis, the author of the original 1991 novel, several well-known actors have already declined the part, likely because they don’t want to be compared to Christian Bale’s iconic performance.
Christian Bale’s portrayal of the disturbed Patrick Bateman is still incredibly memorable, which likely makes other actors cautious about taking on the role. Jacob Elordi and Austin Butler were both previously mentioned as potential candidates, and either could realistically pull it off. However, it seems they are no longer being considered for the part.
New ‘American Psycho’ Movie Will Bear “No Resemblance” to Original

Lionsgate
Christian Bale’s performance as Patrick Bateman perfectly balanced frightening violence with a wildly energetic, almost comical, intensity, which is a big reason the movie, despite its dark themes, was strangely funny. Director Mary Harron and writer Guinevere Turner intentionally created a very dark comedy and satire with American Psycho. Another director and writer might have turned the story into a typical slasher film, or even focused more on the comedic aspects.
Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film is aiming to be distinct from the original American Psycho movie, and that’s a good thing for its success. Bret Easton Ellis, the author of the novel, has said this new adaptation will be a completely different interpretation, bearing little to no resemblance to the 2000 film. If that’s true, the actor playing Patrick Bateman won’t likely be constantly compared to Christian Bale’s performance.
Luca Guadagnino is a skilled director known for his thought-provoking films that explore challenging themes, like he did with Call Me By Your Name and Challengers. That’s why many are excited to see his take on American Psycho, which he’s developing with screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. It remains to be seen if their adaptation can both honor the original story and offer something fresh for longtime fans. Producer Sam Pressman is confident it will be exceptional, predicting a truly “mind-blowing” experience.
