For nearly three decades now, a character named Betty has graced us with her presence, introducing a fresh vocabulary, a fantastical computerized wardrobe, and a timeless story of growth that speaks to every new audience who encounters it.
Plus Paul Rudd, who continues to be kind of a Baldwin as he stubbornly refuses to age.
One memorable aspect of Amy Heckerling’s 1995 movie hit, Clueless, remains the on-screen romance between the actor and his former step-sister, portrayed by Alicia Silverstone. Remarkably, as suggested by the film’s lead actor, there was nothing strange about their relationship.
In the 2023 interview with TopMob News, Silverstone reflected, “She didn’t grow up alongside him as one might expect, more like he went through multiple marriages throughout her childhood.
She admitted, in all honesty, that she hadn’t given it any consideration at all. However, what she was saying now represented the maximum amount of thought she had ever applied to that particular topic.
Not that she’s opposed to revisiting her time in the beloved teenage comedy.
Before officially returning to play the character for Peacock’s upcoming reboot, she frequently donned Cher’s iconic costumes and reenacted scenes on social media, expressing that “The film resonates with people.” (TopMob quote)
frankly speaking, it’s quite challenging to fully capture all the impact that the movie Clueless had on us. It introduced the slang of the ’90s (“completely freaking out,” “completely amazing, like, all the time”), and dialogue that still brings smiles to faces today (“And my butt, it doesn’t feel anything like steel”). The certified platinum soundtrack (“Rollin’ With My Homies”!) is another highlight, as well as the fashion trends that inspired many Gen Xers to move away from grunge. However, the most significant aspect might be the portrayal of a feminist icon who demonstrated that one could be imperfect and somewhat airheaded yet still incredibly strong.
It all started when Fox’s TV department approached Heckerling with a request. Fresh from working on “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “Look Who’s Talking”, they asked her to come up with an idea. They specifically wanted something focused on young people, more precisely the popular high school crowd, as every other pitch they received about high school was always centered around the nerds.
In a charming reinterpretation, Heckerling’s movie Emma draws inspiration from the heroine of Jane Austen, whom she befriended in college. The narrative unfolds around Cher, a self-assured, perpetually optimistic character, her friend Dionne Davenport (named after past famous singers who now host infomercials), and their affluent Beverly Hills high school circle. As newcomer Tai Fraser remarks, they converse like adults and dress in ways that were unfamiliar to us as typical high school students.
In the final analysis, their aim was simply to bring some positivity into existence, as it is indeed a much nobler and more rewarding action to help others.
The film, earning $55 million, was unexpectedly acclaimed as the season’s breakout hit. Yet, everyone involved knew they were dealing with something special. As then-studio head Sherry Lansing put it during her first screening: “I adored it. I don’t often find myself laughing easily; I’m always looking for ways to improve a movie. But every so often, you come across a film that leaves your notepad untouched – and all you can say is, ‘This is brilliant.’
The ones who were, illuminating the Silverstone, Rudd, Stacey Dash (Dionne), and Brittany Murphy (Tai) stardom, managed to persuade a whole generation of girls that they too could pull off a plaid suit and knee-socks ensemble, and in doing so, sparked the wave of successful teen shows that came after.
Let’s toast two bowls of Special K to our beloved virgin who can’t drive, and the man she is deeply, madly, utterly smitten with. Let’s celebrate their July 19th anniversary by watching the film more consistently and learning about how it was made.

Let’s lift up two bowls of Special K to our favorite girl who can’t drive and her one true love. To commemorate their July 19th anniversary, let’s sit down for a focused viewing of the film and delve into its production story.
Finding a high school boy might be as pointless as trying to find sense in a Pauly Shore film, but researching at Beverly Hills High proved incredibly productive for writer-director Amy Heckerling. As she shared with Entertainment Weekly, “What I noticed most was the girls were always preoccupied with grooming.
At different editing phases, the producers struggled to decide on a suitable title for their high school movie. Some early suggestions were “No Worries” and “I Was a Teenage Teenager.
Alicia Silverstone was almost destined to play Cher, as Heckerling noticed her impressive performance in a series of Aerosmith music videos. When it came to submitting the script, Heckerling made sure to include a video of the actress she favored, telling The Telegraph later on about this decision.
Simultaneously, my friend and casting director, Carrie Frazier, persistently advised me to meet this young actress she thought was fantastic. She had starred in a movie called “The Crush”. Her name happened to be Alicia Silverstone. I responded by expressing my preference for the girl from Aerosmith’s music videos, not realizing that we were actually discussing the same person.
4. During a dinner outing, Silverstone won Heckerling over by sipping her drink in an endearing manner. As shared by associate producer Twink Caplan, who brought Miss Geist to life on screen, “Instead of raising the glass and straw to her lips, Alicia gracefully leaned over the table to sip through the straw directly from the glass.” Impressed, Heckerling thought, “‘Oh my god, this is my girl.’ Alicia embodied Cher, she was just the sweetest individual, and she remains so today.
5. Although Heckerling was confident about her choice, she had to follow instructions from executives who aimed to cast a wide range of actresses. At different stages of the casting process, she mentioned in Jen Chaney’s 2015 book, “As If!: The Oral History of Clueless,” excerpted by Vanity Fair, that she had considered Alicia Witt, Tiffani Thiessen, Keri Russell, and the girl from [Flesh and Bone], who later turned out to be Gwyneth Paltrow. However, she never got to see the latter as she was occupied with other projects.
Reese Witherspoon was highly praised as well, with people saying things like “She’s incredible! She’s destined for greatness,” according to Heckerling’s remembrance. However, it was Alicia Silverstone who embodied the role of Cher.
Among the other close calls were candidates such as Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner, Lauryn Hill, Terrence Howard, Seth Green, Owen Wilson, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Affleck, Renner, and Hill were considered for the role of Cher’s friend Dionne; Howard for Dionne’s boyfriend Murray; Green and Wilson for the lovable stoner Travis; and Gellar for the character Amber, who was always struggling with fashion. Co-producer Adam Schroeder disclosed in “As If!” that there were negotiations to release Sarah Michelle Gellar from her role on “All My Children,” but the producers refused, only allowing her a brief absence for the filming of Clueless.
7. It’s hard to think of anyone other than Paul Rudd as Cher’s antagonist-turned-boyfriend Josh, but another actor almost got the role. The studio was considering another star initially, but when their plan didn’t work out, they returned to Paul Rudd and he impressed everyone during his screen test. “He underwent numerous auditions to secure that part,” casting director Marcia Ross told The Telegraph, recalling the actor’s determination.
Originally, he had wished to be considered for a different part. However, he later admitted to Chaney in her 2015 book, “I assumed Murray was a Caucasian man trying to portray a Black character. I didn’t know he was of African descent. Also, I thought: This is an unusual character, a white man attempting to embody Black culture. But, it turns out, that character will be played by an African-American actor. Well, that’s surprising.
9. Finding the ideal actor to portray Cher’s long-standing crush, Christian, proved to be the most challenging part during the casting. As Ross explained, “We auditioned countless candidates but none seemed just right.” The difficulty lay in discovering an actor who could evoke the desired nostalgic feel.
As soon as the actor from New York, Justin Walker, stepped into the room, it was clear he had what they were looking for. Until then, they hadn’t decided who would play Christian. Walker, who only had a few hours to prepare before his audition, will never forget the moment he heard the good news. “I was working at a bar called Overtime Bar and Grill, right next to Madison Square Garden,” he recalled in As If!. “I was talking on a pay phone – yes, a pay phone! – when my agent told me I got the part, and I immediately dropped the phone and started running south on Eighth Avenue.
10. In contrast, portraying lovelorn teachers Miss Geist and Mr. Hall was considered an uncomplicated task for Wallace Shawn. He stated, “I guess they thought I was suitable for the role without needing to audition.” Interestingly, he had previously been a schoolteacher, which gave him some personal insight into the characters.
Regarding Heckerling’s associate producer Caplan, she initially didn’t grasp that she was being cast as the charming Miss Geist. She mentioned that the character was likely modeled after a teacher Amy had in school, and she believed Caplan would be capable of playing her.
11. When the actor selected as Cher’s mugger unexpectedly withdrew from the role hours before being called upon, Heckerling found herself in a bind and had to act swiftly. As there were no mobile phones at that time, she was left making calls to everyone at their offices, but found no one available to answer. By chance, Actor Jace Alexander was working with producer Scott Rudin at the moment, so he ended up getting the part.
12. Breckin Meyer felt especially excited when he landed the role of Travis. At that point in his life, he recounted to Entertainment Weekly, “I was going through a really tough phase career-wise. I had spent all the money I earned as a child from doing commercials. I lived above a garage, and I didn’t have heating, hot water or even a proper bed – just a mattress on the floor. To take showers and do my laundry, I had to skateboard over to Seth Green’s house.”
At 17, Silverstone wasn’t as fashion-focused as her character Cher, acknowledging during a 2019 Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo panel that she often found it hard to connect with Cher’s wardrobe choices because she typically wore the same green t-shirt and jeans. In contrast, Cher donned approximately 64 outfits throughout the film’s 100-minute runtime.
During the first press run in 1995, she confessed to the Allentown Morning Call that she had to do extensive research for this role because she dislikes dressing up in fancy clothes. She prefers wearing black sweatpants and a T-shirt. Essentially, she’s very earthy and a complete tomboy at heart.
14. Stacey Dash shared with The Telegraph that determining each girl’s unique style took an entire week’s worth of work, dedicating 10 hours per day to fittings, amounting to seven days in total. “In normal circumstances,” she said, “we would cover two days, but this time we had a lot more clothing options to go through.” Her favorite look? Dionne’s plaid outfit complete with a hat resembling a charming miniature cake.
15. According to her, the chemistry between Dash and Murray (who later became known for his role in Scrubs with Donald Faison) was genuine; it wasn’t just acting, as she shared with The Telegraph.
Without a doubt, Faison didn’t hold back his feelings. He admitted, “I was smitten by her.” He also recalled telling his friends that he would be dating the girl from Mo’ Money, and they became quite excited, inquiring if he would kiss her. His response was, “Absolutely! I’m not just going to kiss her; I’m going to give her a memorable one!
In actuality, it marked his initial kiss on screen. After I called “cut,” he acted as if he had consumed too much energy drink and ran wildly across the set, according to Heckerling’s account to the New York Post. He was like an overexcited puppy. Indeed, he was joyful and proud.
17. In the frosty winter of 1994, our 40-day filming adventure was strikingly reminiscent of those carefree high school days we all yearn for. I can still hear Shawn’s voice echoing, “Working on this movie was like attending a harmless soiree, where the main activity was ‘Let’s Create a Movie!'” The actors weren’t necessarily aiming for stardom; they were simply enjoying the thrill of something novel and amusing. It was an absolute joy, pure entertainment!
18. It wasn’t unusual to see the younger actors socializing in each other’s trailers. As Elisa Donovan, who played the snooty character “Monet” Amber, exclaimed, “We had a blast the whole time, it was like living a dream.” “You’re working with people your own age, wearing outrageous costumes, and it was essentially the start of everything for everyone,” she added.
Regarding Faison, he often reminisces about laid-back days spent hanging out with his friends. Cooped up with Meyer in a shared trailer, they would frequently remove the partition and spend their time together. Filming was effortless for them; all they had to do was show up, relax in the trailer, take a nap, and then shoot a scene.
19. In the following weeks, Meyer and Rudd became inseparable, often sharing a living space at Meyer’s place. They spent their evenings watching movies starring Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, as Meyer recounted to Entertainment Weekly. During the day, they ventured out to seek additional job opportunities.
As the weight of the movie’s success rested heavily on her, Silverstone approached her role differently compared to her fellow cast members. In her words, “For me, it was just work.” While others seemed to enjoy their time coming and going, she was present in every scene, enduring long hours and feeling exhausted due to her constant involvement.
21. Alicia had a little dog that often made a mess outside her make-up trailer, as Caplan explained to The Telegraph. “People were complaining about stepping in it,” he said, “so I had to ask if they could get him a leash or something!
22. During filming of a memorable scene from the Valley party, the cast didn’t perform well. After having trouble executing the “Suck and Blow” action using an actual credit card, the props team was assigned to create one out of cardboard. Multiple layers of ChapStick were used to enhance the suction power.
During filming of a famous scene from a party in the Valley, the actors didn’t do so great. They had trouble doing the “Suck and Blow” action with a real credit card, so the props team made one out of cardboard. They added ChapStick to make it sticky.
Similarly unfortunate: Murray’s bald head – a style that had Dionne considering contacting his mother. Meyer unveiled at the 2019 Chicago panel that they kept some hair on the sides of Faison’s head, only enough to be visible when he was filmed while wearing a hat.
24. Heckerling made a quick appearance as a bridesmaid in Miss Geist’s wedding scene. According to Caplan, this was because he adores Amy and insisted she be his bridesmaid in the film. In an interview with the New York Post, Caplan shared, “When I threw the bouquet, the guests weren’t getting into it enough, so Amy had to step in and shove everyone around. You can see a shot of her pushing everyone.
In my role as a lifestyle expert, I’d say, “You might think that the iconic ‘As if!’ exclamation was a stroke of genius by Heckerling all on her own. But no! As an enthusiast of language and its usage, she shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2016 that she simply tapped into the zeitgeist. At the time, which was the early ’90s, the phrase was already popular within the gay community. She recognized its versatility and thought it would resonate well among teenagers.
Among the outlet’s top 100 favorite movie quotes, Heckerling particularly cherished this one from Cher’s emotional debate class speech: “I suppose, in a humorous fashion, I’ve always taken pride in ‘It does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty.’
27. Creating the complete vocabulary took some deliberate study. As she interviewed children, she would often inquire about new words, that’s where she discovered the term ‘going postal’. Regarding other terms, ‘Betty’ was inspired by Betty Rubble, a character known for her beauty, she explained. And ‘Barney’ was a reference to the question, “How on earth did he win her over?
One memorable scene in the movie was when Silverstone delivered a passionate argument about immigration, albeit with an unintentional mispronunciation of Haitians. As Heckerling recounted to EW, “she pronounced it incorrectly and everyone rushed up to correct her. I had to intervene because it was funnier that way. That was Cher.
29. It’s quite challenging to pick a single standout moment from the movie, but for Dash, it was undeniably the tennis-court scene where Elisa Donovan quips, “My plastic surgeon doesn’t want me doing activities where balls might hit my nose.” To which he responds, “There goes your social life.” On the other hand, Silverstone particularly enjoys Tai’s memorable line, “You’re a virgin who can’t drive,” as she delivers it with such precision and attitude. It’s her puckered lips and the way she says it that always makes Silverstone chuckle. She finds it especially harsh yet hilarious.
30. Rudd doubts that Cher and Josh are still together due to their California residence instead of Kentucky, but Silverstone remains hopeful. She expressed to Entertainment Weekly that perhaps Cher is married to Paul Rudd, has children, and is passionate about her work. “Maybe she’s a professional organizer,” she suggested. “Whatever she does, I don’t think she’s bothersome anymore.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d say that if 2020 Cher were alive today, she’d be all about promoting awareness and advocating for change. She’d certainly encourage everyone to wear masks for safety, and she’d stand firm on issues like equality, equal pay, immigration reform, prison reform, the environment, climate change, and fighting against corporations that pollute our food, air, and water resources. She’d be a force to be reckoned with in advocating for what she believed in!
