Returning to the Kanto region is always enjoyable, but with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen launching on Switch this week, it’s a particularly great time to do so.
To mark 30 years of Pokémon, Nintendo has released the long-awaited remakes of the Generation 3 games on current consoles.
These will be good to have while we’re anticipating Pokopia and, even more excitedly, the release of Generation 10.

When is the Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen release date on Nintendo Switch?
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen will release on Nintendo Switch consoles on 27 February.
Beyond this, we also know that the games will become available at 2pm GMT.
For those of you in other time zones, here’s what time the games will release for you:
- US West Coast (PST) – 6am
- US Mountain (MST) –7am
- US Central (CST) –8am
- US East Coast (EST) –9am
- Central Europe (CET) – 3pm
- Singapore (SGT) –10pm
- Japan (JST) –11pm
- Australia East Coast (AEDT) –1am, 28 February
- New Zealand (NZDT) –3am, 28 February

How much does Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen cost on Nintendo Switch?
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen costs £16.99 each on Switch consoles.
Players in the US and EU will have to pay $19.99 / €19.99 respectively.
Both games are available for pre-order now. Since there’s no option to buy them together, you’ll need to purchase each game separately at full price to get all the exclusive content.
Many players are upset about the high price of this game, especially since it originally came out over 20 years ago. However, when you consider how expensive the original cartridges are to buy now, we think it’s a worthwhile purchase.
What to expect from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch
These releases are essentially the classic Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen games, originally on Game Boy Advance, now updated to take advantage of the Nintendo Switch’s online features.
You won’t need a Game Link Cable or Wireless Adapter anymore to trade with friends – you can now do it directly through local co-op play.
After launch, Pokémon Home will make it much easier to transfer your Pokémon to future games. This is a big improvement over the older method, which required catching them again in Pal Park on the DS games.
