Obi-Wan Kenobi is well-known for being a powerful enemy of the Sith, and this is especially true in Revenge of the Sith. In the film, he defeats General Grievous, a formidable cyborg who had previously bested even Mace Windu. The movie culminates in an epic duel, the “Battle of the Heroes,” where Obi-Wan defeats Anakin Skywalker, who was believed to be the Chosen One. Considering Anakin’s immense power, this victory is arguably one of the most impressive accomplishments in the entire Star Wars saga.
The novelization of Revenge of the Sith by Matt Stover highlighted Obi-Wan Kenobi’s impressive abilities. In the book, Mace Windu explains the Jedi Council chose Obi-Wan to pursue General Grievous because he’s a master of a traditional lightsaber fighting style and possesses exceptional skill and wisdom. This was also hinted at in other official stories, including a memorable scene that showcased just how formidable Obi-Wan truly is.
One Major Revenge of the Sith Foreshadows Obi-Wan’s Skill & Power
In 2005, Lucasfilm often released novels that connected to their upcoming movies. James Luceno’s Labyrinth of Evil was the novel released before Revenge of the Sith, and many fans consider it one of the best from that time – though it’s no longer considered official story material since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012. The novel actually started with just one line from the movie script, where Obi-Wan talks about Anakin saving his life on Cato Neimoidia. Luceno was known for his deep understanding of Star Wars history and details, and he built a captivating story around that single mention.
Anakin and Obi-Wan’s mission to Cato Neimoidia was a failure. Anakin managed to rescue Obi-Wan, but both were injured during the fighting, forcing them to battle the Separatists while hurt. Obi-Wan, despite dislocating his shoulder, impressively fought off fifty enemies and won, though Anakin jokingly said he was using a completely new lightsaber technique.
Obi-Wan Was Always a Force to be Reckoned With
It might seem simple, but a Jedi’s ability to master lightsaber combat is actually incredibly impressive. They don’t just learn the moves; they practice them until they become automatic, allowing them to stay calm and connected to the Force during a fight. This calmness is key, because it lets Jedi sense danger before it happens, making their reflexes much faster. That’s how they block blaster fire – and Obi-Wan, a master of the defensive lightsaber style called Soresu, is especially good at it.
With a dislocated shoulder, Obi-Wan couldn’t fully focus on the Force like usual. He was in pain and had to carefully control every movement, which made it difficult to sense the Force around him. Despite being injured, he still managed to fight—and win! He defeated fifty opponents by adapting his lightsaber skills on the spot. Anakin teased him about it, but he should have paid attention. It could have taught him a valuable lesson about not underestimating an opponent, something that would prove important when they finally clashed in Revenge of the Sith.
