Sony Asked a Shocking Director To Helm Morbius (Could They Have Saved It?)

Could it be possible that Ari Aster, director of ‘Midsommar’, might have turned Sony’s ‘Morbius’ into a success? In a recent interview on the ‘Mixed Signals’ podcast, Aster hinted at past discussions with Marvel for a film project. When asked about the title, he seemed uncertain but eventually confirmed it was ‘Morbius’. However, when informed that the movie failed, Aster jokingly suggested, “Perhaps it could have been part of my repertoire.

Daniel Espinosa took charge of directing Morbius from a script penned by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. Previously, Espinosa has directed movies such as Safe House starring Denzel Washington, Easy Money featuring Joel Kinnaman, and the science-fiction film Life, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, and Ryan Reynolds. Despite collaborating with notable talents in the past, none of Espinosa’s films were critically acclaimed or massive box office hits. Given his experience with large-scale action movies, he was considered a suitable choice for Morbius. However, Ari Aster could have added a more intriguing perspective, potentially offering a distinctive interpretation of the Marvel Comics character.

Aster’s films don’t usually bring in large numbers at the cinema, but exceptions exist – like Heredity and Midsommar. These two movies, despite having modest box office earnings, were financial successes, with Heredity grossing $87.8 million worldwide on a $9 million budget, and Midsommar earning $47.8 million globally. However, although they might not be blockbusters, they consistently receive high praise from both critics and audiences. For instance, Midsommar received an 83% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Heredity earned a remarkable 90%. The upcoming film Morbius might not align with Aster’s typical approach, as he usually writes his own scripts and works within smaller budgets. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Aster thrives when given complete creative freedom.

In much the same way as other superhero movies preceding it, Morbius, from the outset, was expected to be a studio-driven production, giving them greater control than the director. Consequently, it wasn’t too unexpected that the film garnered only $167.4 million globally and received a disappointing 15% “Rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Given these circumstances, Aster seems to have wisely declined involvement in the project, opting instead to pen and direct his newest production, Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal.

Titled “Eddington,” this new release from Aster offers an account of a tense confrontation between a local sheriff and mayor in Eddinton, New Mexico. As neighbors find themselves at odds, the situation escalates dramatically, mirroring perhaps a societal tension during the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics have found it to be somewhat divisive, with a 67% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. You can catch “Eddington” in theaters right now.

Speaking from personal experience, diving into the cinematic universe of Sony’s ‘Morbius’, starring the talented Jared Leto, is an option now available for streaming on both Disney+ and HBO Max.
