For the past fifteen years, many actors in Hollywood have been considered for roles in comic book movies, and Jon Hamm is one of them – despite never actually appearing in one. Fans often suggested Hamm for a big part like Batman, admiring his strong jawline, which reminded them of the character. While he’s done voice work for animated characters and was once in talks to play Mister Sinister in the X-Men films, Hamm hasn’t yet landed a leading role in a superhero movie, but he’s still interested in the possibility.
We recently spoke with John Hamm about his dream of appearing in a comic book movie, specifically for Pixar’s upcoming Hoppers. He confirmed it’s still a major goal for his career, and he’s open to roles based on comics from any publisher, not just Marvel or DC. As a longtime comic book fan, Hamm is excited about the huge amount of source material available for adaptations these days.
Hamm mentioned there are still many fantastic comic book characters and stories beyond Marvel and DC. He specifically expressed a strong desire to be involved in an adaptation of Frank Miller and Bill Sienkiewicz’s Elektra: Assassin, calling it a ‘cool’ project. He feels optimistic about the current trend of comic books being adapted for film and television, pointing to Robert Downey Jr.’s success as a reason to remain hopeful about his own chances at landing a role.
Many readers may not know that Elektra: Assassin was a short comic series written by Frank Miller after his famous run on Daredevil ended (and before he revisited the character in Man Without Fear). In this series, Miller expanded Elektra’s origin story and cleverly hinted at her survival, while also introducing a significant new character to Marvel history: The Beast. However, what’s particularly interesting for actor Jon Hamm, who hopes to play a role in a future adaptation, are two important characters from Elektra: Assassin: John Garrett, a troubled SHIELD agent with an obsession with Elektra who later becomes a cyborg, and Nick Fury, whose appearance in the comic was a pivotal moment for the character in Marvel comics.
Whether Marvel would actually consider a story like this for the main Marvel Cinematic Universe is uncertain. Elektra and The Hand haven’t been fully incorporated into the franchise yet, even though Daredevil: Born Again officially connects the old Netflix series to the current continuity. So far, though, there haven’t been any official connections made to that part of the Marvel world.
As Hamm mentioned, there’s a huge amount of comic book material available that could be turned into movies and TV shows. Even with DC building its new universe and Marvel potentially starting fresh with Avengers: Secret Wars, there will still be plenty of superhero stories to tell on screen.
