In addition to Amazon’s series Invincible being confirmed for seasons four and five, a new voice actor has joined the cast, hinting at potentially portraying one of the show’s most iconic villains from the Image comic property. Although the actor has not disclosed their character yet, it seems likely they will assume the role of the powerful Viltrumite antagonist, Thragg. Fans have eagerly anticipated Thragg’s animated appearance, as he is a formidable foe that Mark Grayson has never faced in his superhero career, which includes battling characters like Aangstrom Levy and Conquest. With season four set to premiere next year, fans can look forward to seeing Thragg make his debut on screen.
Amazon announced that Matthew Rhys will be joining the illustrious cast of Invincible for its fifth season. Known for his roles in live-action series like The Americans, Saturday Night Live, and Perry Mason, Rhys is also an accomplished voice actor, having worked on notable projects such as The Owl House, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Tuca & Bertie, Bojack Horseman, Archer, and many others. Although Thragg’s voice actor hasn’t been confirmed yet, Rhys’ past experience with villainous and vibrant characters could make him a great addition to Mark’s rogues gallery.
Who Else Rhys Could Play?
Previously stated, Rhys hasn’t been officially cast as the King of the Viltrumites yet. This opens up the possibility that he could assume another role instead. More specifically, it’s plausible that the fourth season of Invincible could introduce the antagonist Dinosaurus to the series for the first time. This prehistoric menace isn’t what you’d typically expect from a half-human, half-dinosaur creature and could have significant repercussions for Mark Grayson and his fellow superheroes. While the “Viltrumite War” might dominate season four, there are numerous other conflicts yet to unfold.
One significant plotline that the third season of the Amazon animated series has subtly hinted at is an exclusive storyline from Invincible creator Robert Kirkman. In the final episode of season three, a scene after the credits showed Damien Darkblood deep in the underworld, vowing to another demon that he would be pulling someone down to join them in hell. Since Damien’s associate is an original character voiced by none other than Bruce Campbell from Evil Dead, we can expect more original characters to appear as this new storyline unfolds.
In a recent interview, Kirkman explained his decision to introduce a fresh plotline in the animated series that wasn’t present in the original Image Comic “Invincible”. Unlike the comics, Damian Darkblood didn’t go to hell. He was an adored character from the first season, and Clancy Brown’s portrayal of him was exceptional. The team always aimed to find a way to reintroduce Damian into the series. As it turns out, there’s a plotline from the comics I never got to explore. Every superhero story has a chapter where they visit hell and battle the devil. This is a common theme in DC and Marvel comics, and it holds significant importance. I never incorporated anything like that into “Invincible”. Instead, I kept getting sidetracked, and there was no opportune moment to do so. So, it’s plausible that we might explore something similar in the show, and the scene at the end of that episode hints at this possibility.
