Free Zombie Game on PlayStation Plus Is “Absolutely Insane”

A zombie game that’s currently free on both PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium, and was previously offered as part of PlayStation Plus Essential, is generating buzz as “utterly insane” and worth playing by PS Plus subscribers on PS4 and PS5. This game, a former exclusive to the PS4 from 2019, recently made its way to the PS5 after being released on PC in 2021. Notably, it’s also been optimized for the PS5 Pro, meaning the developers have put extra effort into making it work smoothly on Sony’s premium console. Given that it was developed by a PlayStation studio, this additional work might not come as a shock.

The game up for free on PlayStation Plus this month is Days Gone, created by Bend Studio, a company recognized for its open-world zombie action-adventure games, Syphon Filter series, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Released six years ago, it has been available on PS Plus for quite some time, but it seems that many subscribers are only just playing it now, possibly due to its recent release on PS5 after a five-year wait for the port. Nonetheless, those with PlayStation Plus memberships are finding it quite enjoyable.

This week, the leading post on the PlayStation Plus Reddit forum focuses on a zombie game and strongly suggests playing the game developed by Bend Studio.

1. Is there anyone who’s a fan of Days Gone? This open world is absolutely mind-blowing! Definitely worth checking out. The top comment on the post says: “I’m really into this game, it might just be the only zombie game I’ve spent an absurd amount of time playing.”

2. Are there any Days Gone enthusiasts around? This open world is insanely great! Definitely a must-play. The top comment on the post says: “I adore this game, it might just be the only zombie game I’ve spent countless hours playing.”

An additional remark mentions: “I completed it to achieve Platinum status when it was initially released, and later spent $10 on the PS5 upgraded edition. Last month, I completed it again to achieve Platinum status once more. Clearly, I’m quite fond of this game.

Looking at Days Gone’s review scores on Metacritic might give you the impression that it’s just slightly above average, but despite some initial criticisms, the game was quite popular and garnered a dedicated fanbase. For instance, many PS Plus subscribers praise it highly, and it boasts a 4.65 out of 5 rating on the PlayStation Store and a 92% approval rating on Steam. In essence, it appears that the average PlayStation gamer enjoys the game more than critics did at its launch. However, it’s important to note that the game faced significant performance issues upon release, which undoubtedly impacted its review scores negatively.

As a fellow gamer, I can’t say for certain when Days Gone will be available on PS Plus Extra and Premium. While it’s a great PlayStation title that you might expect to be part of the permanent collection, history has shown us that games have been added and removed from these services in the past. So, while I really hope Days Gone stays put, there’s no guarantee it will always be a PS Plus game.

Players opting for Days Gone through their PlayStation Plus subscription can anticipate a game duration ranging from about 35 to 50 hours, based on the extent of side activities explored. For those aiming for completion, expect to invest around 60 to 70 hours in this undead adventure.
