After the success of Evil Dead and Evil Dead Rise, the popular, gruesome Evil Dead series will continue this year with Evil Dead Burn. Another installment, Evil Dead Wrath, is already being filmed. By releasing separate stories with different directors and locations, the Evil Dead franchise has successfully avoided becoming stale since 2013, offering fresh and exciting takes on the classic Deadites for today’s viewers.

This Recent Evil Dead Update Suggests a Continuing Change in the Franchise’s Direction

Look, let’s be honest, the Evil Dead franchise needed a shot in the arm, and Fede Alvarez delivered with his 2013 sequel. Forget what you knew, because this film throws a whole new group of characters – Mia (played by Jane Levy) and her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) – into a terrifying, updated take on that familiar cabin-in-the-woods scenario. It’s a really effective reinvention that brings the scares to a new generation.

Ten years after the last installment, a new, self-contained film arrived. It follows a family facing eviction who discover the dangerous Necronomicon in their run-down apartment building. The movie offers a thrilling and action-packed addition to the series.

Both movies were hits with horror fans who enjoy graphic violence. The directors updated the classic story for today’s viewers, delivering plenty of blood, intense scares, and truly terrifying moments.

Sam Raimi has chosen Billy Barna to work on Evil Dead Burn, following Barna’s work on the French horror film Infested. Meanwhile, Francis Galluppi, known for his well-received crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, is directing Evil Dead Wrath, which will be his second feature film.

It’s rare for horror series to deviate from a single, ongoing storyline. Most franchises, like the Halloween movies with Michael Myers stalking Laurie Strode from 1978 through Halloween Ends, or the Scream films where Sydney Prescott’s experiences drive Ghostface’s actions, present a continuous narrative. Even the Terrifier series eventually focused on returning characters and the history of its villain, Art the Clown.

However, a potential problem is that constantly revisiting these stories could lead to audiences losing interest. While fans initially return out of fondness for the past, series like Friday the 13th have shown that repeating the same formula eventually leads to diminishing returns and less success, as the stories become predictable and unoriginal.

The Evil Dead series has evolved into something like a collection of standalone stories. Though familiar characters reappear in each film, each one has a unique style reflecting the director’s vision. Sam Raimi’s choice to move the story away from the traditional cabin in the woods was particularly effective. Placing a single mother, her three children, and her pregnant sister in a home setting amplified the emotional weight of the story.

What really worked for me was the reason this family found themselves trapped. Using a nearly deserted apartment building, recently damaged by an earthquake, was a smart move. It cleverly explained why help wasn’t readily available and why escaping was so difficult. And thankfully, it created that familiar sense of isolation the franchise is known for, but in a way that felt natural and believable – not because of silly mistakes or lazy writing. It felt earned, and that made the tension so much more effective.

This series stands out because it’s free to explore completely new ideas. That means every movie feels original and surprising. The terrifying Deadites could show up anywhere – a quiet neighborhood, on a flight, or even a fancy resort. Because the films aren’t tied to existing characters or stories, the possibilities are endless.

This franchise is remarkably creative, consistently giving new directors a chance to try out fresh ideas within the horror genre. Both Alvarez and Cronin delivered inventive films – Alvarez with uniquely gruesome kills, like a memorable scene featuring a carving knife, and Cronin by moving away from the series’ usual formula of a vacation gone wrong. Both films offered exciting and original perspectives on this well-established series.

Details are scarce about the next two Evil Dead movies, but they’re expected to be very intense. It’s unclear where the filmmakers, Vaniček and Galluppi, will take the story and its characters, but with both films already being made, the future of the franchise looks bright.
