The Ultimate Universe, one of Marvel’s most captivating realms in their publishing lineup, is particularly cherished by readers due to its intricate world-building, showcasing the design of a world conceived by the malevolent Maker following the consequences of his initial world at the hands of superheroes. The Maker envisioned a realm where heroes would hold no power, given their past impact. However, the heroes are now standing up against the Maker on all fronts in defiance.
The characters of the Ultimate Universe exhibit unique traits that set them apart from their counterparts in the main 616 universe, a distinction further highlighted in “Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion“, where Miles Morales embarks on a quest to find his sister Billie who accidentally utilized teleportation technology left by the Maker for Miles. This narrative unfolds as Miles crosses over to Earth-6160.
Continuing the Journey in “Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion” #2, Miles Morales finds himself joined by Ant-Man and the Wasp from the Ultimates squad. The intricate relationship between these two Marvel characters has always been one of their most compelling dynamics. Placing them at the heart of Miles’s crossover with the Ultimate Universe was an unexpected yet fascinating twist. In “Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion” #2, we delve into Ant-Man’s thoughts as he and the Wasp assist Miles in gaining access to Wakanda to find his sister. Despite the differences between this alternate universe and Earth-616, one thing remains constant – the Wasp outshines Ant-Man.
The Wasp Has Always Been Much Better than Ant-Man
Following a miscommunication with the Dora Milaje, Miles, Wasp, and Ant-Man are summoned before Black Panther, Shuri, Storm, and Killmonger. The Wasp steps forward to address the monarch and his council, and Ant-Man is impressed by her aptitude for such situations. He begins to reminisce about their past, how his coma had robbed him of the opportunity to become something greater than an exterminator. Throughout this period, the Wasp was a constant presence, helping him regain his faculties. Despite all the transformations in Ant-Man’s life, she remained steadfast by his side. He acknowledges that she excels where he falls short, fitting comfortably among the Ultimates and figures like Black Panther. The Ultimates face a significant challenge ahead, and it seems to him that both he and the team would be better off without him. In truth, he has often considered leaving her, believing her life would be improved without his presence; however, his deep affection for her prevents him from doing so.
What’s intriguing about these advancements is that they bear a striking resemblance to the characters of Wasp and Ant-Man in the 616 Marvel Universe. Hank Pym, a prominent superhero scientist in Marvel, wasn’t just responsible for Pym Particles but also developed the technology for his ant-communication helmet and the tech that enables Wasp’s flying, stinging suit. In the 60s, Marvel had a sexist attitude (for instance, revisit some Stan Lee works from that era), which initially made Ant-Man appear more capable than Wasp. However, over time, Wasp demonstrated her worth. She held the position of chairwoman for the Avengers before Ant-Man ever became an Avengers leader, as his psychological issues would only complicate the team’s trust in him. Wasp earned the respect of the rest of the team and even played a crucial role in defeating the Masters of Evil during the “Under Siege” storyline. While Wasp continued to grow and evolve as a hero, Ant-Man remained stagnant. In fact, the only instance where Ant-Man displayed true heroism was when he used the Wasp’s abilities. Since the beginning, Wasp has proven superior, and that’s not even considering the version of Ant-Man from Earth-1610.
The Wasp Is Always Better Off Without Ant-Man
As a die-hard movie buff, I must admit that issue #2 of Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion wasn’t exactly groundbreaking in terms of crossover stories. However, the segments featuring Ant-Man truly added an electrifying twist to the narrative. It’s no secret that Ant-Man struggles with feelings of inadequacy – after all, who can forget the time he slapped the Wasp or the incident in 1610 where he attacked her? Yet, what sets Earth-6160’s Ant-Man apart is his mature response to these emotions. Instead of succumbing to anger or feeling inferior because she seems superior, he embraces and accepts their unique dynamic. It’s evident that he would go to any lengths for her, even sacrificing himself if necessary.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit that it’s not really shocking to me that many fans find Wasp to be superior to Ant-Man. After all, Wasp has graced some truly remarkable Avengers stories, while Ant-Man has had fewer opportunities to shine. For instance, she was a key player in the Uncanny Avengers (Vol. 1), which stands out as a gem among 21st century Avengers books. And that’s just scratching the surface of her impressive storyline. Compared to Wasp, Ant-Man simply doesn’t hold a candle in terms of intrigue and depth. The dynamic between Earth-6160’s Wasp and Ant-Man serves as a reminder that even as things evolve, certain elements remain constant – the Wasp remains an engaging and captivating character, while Ant-Man remains… well, Ant-Man.
