The recent shutdown of Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the fantastic remakes of Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, is disappointing for many fans. A common question has been why Sony didn’t assign them the highly anticipated remake of Bloodborne. According to information shared by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, that project simply didn’t move forward with Bluepoint.
After its live-service God of War game was canceled, Bluepoint Games supposedly proposed a remake to Sony. Although Sony thought the project made financial sense, FromSoftware reportedly didn’t want to pursue it. According to sources, this might be because Sony wanted to honor a request from FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki that no other studio work on a similar project – a detail former Sony Interactive Entertainment president Shuhei Yoshida shared after leaving the company.
Bluepoint Games had ideas for several new projects, including a remake of Shadow of the Colossus, a spin-off of Ghost of Tsushima, and others. However, the studio was reportedly struggling financially and couldn’t secure the funding to pursue them. Sony eventually lost confidence in Bluepoint’s ability to lead its own game development, and partnership attempts failed, ultimately leading to the studio’s closure.
The studio likely anticipated these issues, as some staff reportedly became worried after the God of War Trilogy Remake was announced. Ultimately, it’s sad to see a talented studio close, but other companies, like CI Games – the publisher of Lords of the Fallen 2 – are offering positions to former employees.
