All Gear 5 Users in One Piece Ranked By Strength

The Wano Country arc dramatically changed One Piece with the revelation of Luffy’s Devil Fruit’s true nature. Initially thought to be a standard power, it was actually a legendary Zoan-type Devil Fruit – considered the most improbable and powerful of its kind. The World Government tried to hide all records of the fruit because of the danger it represented. Luffy nearly died when he unlocked his Devil Fruit’s full potential, achieving a level of power he never imagined. This power is linked to the Sun God Nika, a legendary warrior known for freeing slaves with a cheerful smile.

The awakening of Nika’s powers, signaled by the ‘Drums of Liberation,’ allows the user to become incredibly flexible and reshape their environment – abilities similar to those granted by a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. While Luffy refers to this as ‘Gear 5,’ this power isn’t new; it’s existed for ages, and others have wielded it before. Here’s a look at how those past users stack up in terms of strength.

4) Jewelry Bonney

A particularly debated moment in the series involves Bonney displaying a transformation similar to Luffy’s. However, this was just a temporary power boost – an imitation of his ability. Her Devil Fruit, the Age-Age Fruit, lets her change the ages of herself and others, and even create a future based on her own vision.

Growing up, Bonney found solace and a dream of freedom in the legends of the warrior Nika, stories her father used to tell her. When she saw Luffy’s powerful Gear 5 transformation, she immediately recognized it as Nika’s true form. During the fight on Egghead, Bonney pictured a future where she was completely free, and in that moment, she became the embodiment of that freedom herself.

3) Monkey D. Luffy

From the very start, One Piece has explored ideas of freedom and breaking free, and Luffy’s recent Gear 5 transformation has only strengthened those themes. This isn’t just a typical power boost seen in action stories; it’s deeply connected to the story’s central ideas and the history of the world. Although Luffy just unlocked this new ability, the power he’s shown is incredible.

When Luffy activates his Gear 5 form, he can turn himself and everything around him into rubber, essentially making his imagination real. He can create objects from thin air. However, using Gear 5 quickly exhausts him, which could be a major problem when fighting strong enemies.

2) Joyboy

Around 800 years ago, Joyboy was the very first pirate and bravely fought against the combined forces of the world. While we haven’t seen what he looked like yet, his abilities seem similar to Luffy’s, but much stronger. Luffy still has a ways to go in mastering his Devil Fruit and Haki to become as powerful as Joyboy was.

During the Egghead Island arc, we saw a small demonstration of Joyboy’s incredibly powerful Haki, enough to make the entire island tremble. Imu, even from far away at Pangea Castle, felt this power and was terrified. The full story of Joyboy will be revealed in the final part of the series, including his epic battle against the leaders of the united nations. He ultimately lost this fight, which brought the Void Century to a close.

1) Nika

The Devil Fruit came into being because, for centuries, people longed for the return of Nika. Nika existed long before the time of Joyboy, during a chaotic period, and remains a symbol of freedom. Though his story has been largely forgotten, the Giants of Elbaph still remember and share his legend.

The Buccaneers attempted to keep the story of Nika alive, but they were all destroyed by the World Government. Now, only the Giants remember the tale of this legendary warrior. Although Nika’s abilities are still a mystery, it seems likely they surpass the powers typically gained from Devil Fruits.
