The Dark Knight trilogy firmly presented Batman as a solitary hero, but fans often imagined Christian Bale’s version teaming up with other DC superheroes. Around the time Christopher Nolan’s films were being made, Marvel started building its Cinematic Universe, proving that shared universes and superhero crossovers could be successful. Even as the Marvel movies gained popularity, Batman remained separate, appearing alone until after Nolan finished his trilogy. It wasn’t until Ben Affleck became the new Batman that DC began exploring a shared universe. However, there was a possibility of including Bale’s Batman in the DC Extended Universe if circumstances had been different.
Zack Snyder recently discussed the possibility of bringing Christian Bale’s Batman into the same universe as Henry Cavill’s Superman during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He explained that it could have happened if Bale hadn’t retired the character at the end of The Dark Knight Rises. Snyder liked the idea of John Blake becoming the new Batman, but felt it wasn’t his place to develop that storyline. He believes that if Bale’s Batman hadn’t retired – if the film had ended with Christian Bale still actively fighting crime in Gotham – then a crossover with Superman would have been a real possibility. Snyder added that if Chris Nolan had considered that a potential direction, he might have kept that option open, but they never actually discussed it.
Keeping Christian Bale’s Batman Separate Was the Right Move

Following the style of his Dark Knight films, Christopher Nolan likely wasn’t focused on creating opportunities for future crossovers with other characters. He was primarily interested in telling Bruce Wayne’s story, and using it to examine powerful ideas like fear, chaos, and suffering. Ultimately, the films are about one man’s dedication to protecting his city and becoming an inspiration to others. Many consider The Dark Knight Rises a perfect ending because it brings Bruce Wayne’s story to a truly satisfying conclusion.
It was satisfying to see Bruce Wayne find peace and happiness after everything he suffered. He completed the journey he started in Batman Begins, confident that Gotham was safe under the leadership of Commissioner Gordon and John Blake. Given the huge success of the Dark Knight trilogy, Warner Bros. likely wanted to continue the story within the DCEU. However, Nolan had earned enough influence to finish his series as he envisioned, and the studio respected his creative control, allowing him to conclude his story on his own terms before moving on to other projects.
While a showdown between Bale and Cavill’s characters would have been exciting, it would have limited Snyder’s creative freedom with his DC Universe films. He’d have been forced to follow the established rules of Nolan’s Batman movies instead of developing his own versions of the characters. One of the great things about superhero stories is that characters can constantly change and be reimagined. Rebooting Batman with a different actor – Affleck – allowed Snyder to create a Bruce Wayne who was deeply disillusioned before Superman helped him regain hope. Affleck’s Batman had a unique history, different from Bale’s, including the tragic loss of Robin, which shaped his cynical outlook.
The DC Extended Universe had its share of problems, with many films receiving mixed reviews and plenty of behind-the-scenes drama. However, the casting of Batman was a clear success. While some fans initially questioned the choice, Ben Affleck ultimately proved to be a fantastic Batman, making a strong impact in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s a shame he never got to star in his own dedicated Batman movie. Meanwhile, Christian Bale’s Dark Knight trilogy continues to be celebrated as one of the most important and influential film series of its time.
