Despite a difficult production, Scream 7 premiered in theaters this weekend with the return of Neve Campbell, hoping to capture the excitement of longtime fans. However, critics haven’t been kind, giving it some of the lowest ratings in the series’ history. The box office tells a different story, though. Scream 7 was expected to perform well, and strong numbers from preview screenings hinted at a hit. Now, the film has broken records and achieved even greater success.
Reports from Deadline indicate that Scream 7 earned about $64.1 million domestically in its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing debut in the series’ history. This is a significant increase from the $44.4 million earned by Scream VI during its first weekend. Globally, Scream 7 has already brought in around $97.2 million, surpassing the total lifetime earnings of Scream 4 (without adjusting for inflation). Before the weekend, experts predicted a domestic opening of $45 to $50 million.
Will Scream 7 Have Strong Legs at the Box Office?

Despite mostly negative reviews, the strong opening weekend for Scream 7 wasn’t unexpected. The Scream franchise is still well-known after 30 years, and there weren’t many competing movies released at the same time. It was easily the biggest new film this weekend, outperforming continuing releases like GOAT and Wuthering Heights. The real test will be how well it continues to perform in the coming weeks, as there are some concerns about its long-term box office success.
Horror movies often earn most of their money during their opening weekend, with ticket sales dropping sharply afterward. Last year’s The Conjuring: Last Rites is a prime example – it set a new box office record for the series with an $84 million debut, but then sales fell almost 70% in its second weekend. We might see something similar happen with Scream 7. Dedicated fans will likely go to the movie right away, but negative reviews or word-of-mouth could keep more casual moviegoers from seeing it in theaters.
This weekend, moviegoers will have more choices as Pixar’s Hoppers and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! both open in theaters. While these films likely appeal to different audiences than Scream 7, some horror fans might also be interested in The Bride! Hoppers is getting a lot of positive attention and could help Pixar regain momentum. The Bride! doesn’t have quite the same level of hype, but it features a strong cast – including Jessie Buckley, who is an Oscar favorite, and Christian Bale – and a unique visual style.
While Scream 7 might not stay at the top of the box office for long, Paramount doesn’t need it to be a massive hit to make a profit. With a production budget of $45 million, the film is already on track to become profitable before it leaves theaters. This is why Paramount is already planning Scream 8 – the franchise consistently attracts audiences, even when reviews aren’t great. To keep the series going, the filmmakers should focus on finding new and creative ways to revitalize it and improve its critical reception.
