The Blade movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced many changes and delays over the years, and it’s unclear what the final product will look like. Looking back, Marvel had a great chance to set up this story perfectly seven years ago. Blade has the potential to be a really exciting film – a vampire hunter in leather battling vampires offers endless story possibilities. With the current, troubled production, it’s a good time to remember a missed opportunity that could have been fantastic.
Mahershala Ali was announced as the new Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe years ago, but fans haven’t seen him in a live-action role yet. Though Blade has appeared in the MCU – first through a voice cameo in the post-credits scene of Eternals, and then as a variant in Marvel Zombies (a mix of Blade and Moon Knight) – we haven’t seen Mahershala Ali fully take on the role. Even with Wesley Snipes reprising the character in Deadpool & Wolverine, Ali’s official debut as the MCU’s Blade is still yet to come.
The Blip Was The Perfect Opportunity To Introduce Blade’s Vampires

There are many ways Marvel could introduce vampires into its cinematic universe, but Avengers: Infinity War presented a particularly interesting opportunity. Thanos eliminated half of all life with his snap, but this event likely wouldn’t have affected vampires. Their undead nature would have probably protected them from the effects of the snap.
Vampires are undead, so they wouldn’t have been affected by Thanos’ snap, unlike humans. This effectively doubled the vampire population during the Blip. The five years between Infinity War and Endgame would have been a period of growth for them, as the disruption to human society created opportunities for vampires to increase their numbers and feed.
A Blade movie set during this time would have been really compelling, focusing on Blade battling an increasing vampire population. He’s likely been working behind the scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for some time, and a larger threat would naturally bring his story to the forefront. This could have been the most ambitious Blade story yet, and a perfect way to introduce him properly into the MCU.
It’s a shame Blade wasn’t included in Infinity War and Endgame because it would have been a great way to connect his story to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. While there are still options for introducing Blade now, featuring him during those films would have been the most seamless approach. Considering Blade’s role likely won’t be huge in the overall MCU narrative, it would have been smart to link a major *Avengerslevel threat directly to his world.
The MCU Can Still Set Blade During The Blip

Even though a Blade movie would have logically fit better after Endgame, Marvel could still set it during the Blip – the time when half of all life disappeared. They’ve already shown they’re willing to explore this period, as seen in Hawkeye, which revealed what some characters did during the Blip. A Blade film set a few years in the past would be a great way to revisit a popular and exciting time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Setting Blade’s story a few years before other events allows for a stronger build-up to his future appearances. It’s likely Blade will eventually lead the MCU’s Midnight Sons team, which explains his brief scene with Black Knight after the credits of Eternals. This earlier timeline gives Blade time to gather and train other supernatural heroes, transforming him from a lone operator into a team leader and allowing for more in-depth character growth.
It’s unlikely things will go as originally planned for the Blade movie. Early ideas involved setting it in the past, but those plans were abandoned. The film has faced many changes, and it’s unclear what Marvel Studios intends for the character. Because of these production issues, Blade will likely be released as a standalone film, which will allow other Marvel movies to move forward without being delayed by its release.
