The anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is now showing what many fans consider its strongest story arc yet, picking up after a short break. The first season concluded with Fern earning her official mage certification, which allowed her and her companions to journey north. Now, the group faces increasing danger as they travel toward their goal. The current season has moved into the Divine Revolte Arc, bringing Frieren’s party to the Rufen Region of the Northern Plateau, where they must defeat a demon responsible for the destruction of a village. With only 10 episodes planned for this season, the story is quickly approaching its conclusion.
The current season of the show is a big step up from the first, with the stakes getting higher as the characters approach Aureole. According to reports from Oricon, the voice actors discussed the season’s developments and how the story has evolved. This season places a greater emphasis on the relationships between the main characters. Atsumi Tanezaki (Frieren), Kana Ichinose (Fern), and Chiaki Kobayashi (Stark) all shared their thoughts on the changes in the show’s themes and overall message compared to Season 1.
Frieren’s Voice Actor Opens Up About The Change in Her Character
Frieren lives much longer than her old companions, so she’s tasked with remembering them. As Tanezaki explains, she’s currently traveling with Fern and Stark, using the journey to better understand people.
The voice actor explained that the character chooses to be with her companions to grow and learn, and they experience a lot together. However, she knows they won’t last forever, and the actor imagines Frieren being left behind, ultimately ending up crying by herself later on.
At the beginning of the story, Frieren didn’t care much about understanding humans, even though she’d traveled with them for ten years. Because humans live such short lives compared to her, she didn’t see the point in getting close to them. But after Himmel died, she wished she’d known him better. This regret led her to begin a journey to Aureole, a place where the spirits of the deceased gather, hoping to reconnect with him.
Traveling with Fern and Stark, she’s determined to get to know the people she encounters on her journey. But even if she succeeds, she knows they’ll eventually leave, which adds a layer of sadness and significance to her travels. The time she shared with Himmel and the others, though fleeting, wasn’t without purpose.
I’ve been really captivated by how this story blends what’s happening now with flashbacks to the past – it feels like both timelines are unfolding at the same time. The first season gave us little hints of Frieren’s adventures with Himmel’s group, which were touching. But now, those memories aren’t just background details; they’re actively shaping what Frieren does and how she feels in the present, and it’s having a much bigger impact than before.
