Tsunekazu Ishihara, head of The Pokémon Company, shared his vision for the future of Pokémon: focusing on fun games and embracing new technologies. In a recent interview with Apple’s App Store, he discussed the origins of the franchise, starting with the popular Pokémon Red and Blue, and how technologies like augmented reality could create exciting new ways to play.
When I think about the very first Pokémon games, Red and Blue, I always remember how much the Kanto region felt like Japan. The creators wanted to make it feel relatable, like an adventure that could happen close to home. They really believed – and I totally agree – that connecting the Pokémon world to our own makes things way more interesting. It’s cool because playing felt like things I already did as a kid – catching bugs, fishing, taking care of pets, even gardening. It made the game feel so much more real and immersive.
Ishihara talked about the exciting potential of new technologies, imagining a future where a Pokémon like Pikachu could appear right in front of you. He noted that while augmented reality is interesting, it might lose its appeal over time. He believes people would enjoy it more if they could actively explore the real world – perhaps getting some exercise while interacting with a Pokémon that feels truly alive and independent.
I was asking about what’s next for Pokémon, and the creator admitted saying he just wants to ‘keep making fun games’ is pretty vague! But he really hit the nail on the head when he said the whole series thrives because people actually enjoy playing them. It’s simple, but so true!
We need to keep focusing on creating fun games,” he explained. “Ultimately, whether people actually play and enjoy our games is what matters most – and that’s something we can’t control. Maintaining that enjoyment is key, even if other things evolve and change.
Junichi Masuda’s comments follow the recent announcement of the next Pokémon games – Pokémon Winds and Waves – by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. The games, set to launch in 2027 on the Nintendo Switch 2, were revealed with a trailer showing diverse environments like forests and beaches, and introducing three new starter Pokémon: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua.
The official website for Pokémon Winds and Waves has confirmed the new games will feature open-world gameplay. Players will explore islands and a large ocean, and discover Pokémon living naturally in diverse ecosystems.
I was so excited to see Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen finally come to the Nintendo Switch! They’re remakes of the very first Pokémon games – the ones that started it all back on the original Game Boy in 1996 – and they only cost $20 each. It’s awesome to be able to revisit those classic adventures!
