While Avengers: Doomsday has a lot to achieve, it’s important that the film avoids repeating a mistake made in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. With the Infinity Saga now over – Thanos was defeated in Avengers: Endgame seven years ago – the MCU is heading towards another major event. However, building up to this new saga, the Multiverse Saga, hasn’t been as easy for Marvel Studios, as they’ve faced several challenges.
To reassure fans worried about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the Infinity Saga, Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are bringing back some of their most reliable collaborators. This includes actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, who will reprise their roles as Doctor Doom and Steve Rogers, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are leading the new project. Bringing these familiar faces back is considered the most secure way to help Avengers: Doomsday succeed.
It’s hard to deny the success these talented filmmakers have had with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They played key roles in some of the franchise’s biggest hits, like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. However, when it comes to the next Avengers movie, the Russo brothers need to avoid a pattern that showed up in their most popular films, especially concerning the most important hero in the current storyline.
The Russos Never Got The Chance To Evolve Loki In The Infinity Saga
The 2014 film Captain America: The Winter Soldier marked the Russo brothers’ first involvement with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its success led them to direct 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, a movie that was crucial in building towards the epic conclusion of the Infinity Saga. Civil War essentially served as their audition to direct the next Avengers films, as it also involved a large cast of characters. However, because the film was largely realistic and down-to-earth, the Russos didn’t get the opportunity to work with more fantastical, cosmic characters like the Asgardians.
The film Avengers: Infinity War marked the first time the filmmakers showed Thor and his people. The movie began with the Asgardians facing Thanos and his Black Order, immediately setting up the high stakes of the story. Although the directors were able to develop Thor’s story throughout the last two Avengers films, they weren’t given the same opportunity with Loki, who was just as important a character. This was mainly due to how Loki was used in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Loki’s death in Avengers: Infinity War was significant because it immediately showed how powerful and cruel Thanos was. The filmmakers, the Russo brothers, didn’t have much time to develop Loki’s story in that film, as he died very early on. Tom Hiddleston did return in Avengers: Endgame for the time travel scene set during the Battle of New York in 2012, but it was the same mischievous version of Loki we’d already seen, meaning his character didn’t evolve at all in that appearance.
Why The Russos Must Buck Loki’s Trend In Avengers: Doomsday
With the Russo brothers returning to direct the next Avengers film, they should learn from how they previously handled Loki. The God of Mischief has gone through a lot since Thanos’s rise and fall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While this Loki isn’t the original, he’s still essentially the same character. Even though this version didn’t personally experience his past redemption arc, he still remembers what his life was meant to be.
Disney+’s Loki series gave the character his own unique adventure. The show was a turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing the concept of the multiverse and establishing Loki as a key hero within it. By the end of season 2, after developing close relationships with characters like Mobius, Loki made a huge sacrifice to save everything. He became the God of Stories, choosing to isolate himself at the core of time and essentially become a living tree – resembling the mythical Yggdrasil – to hold the entire multiverse together.
The Russo brothers, having established Loki’s important, if often unseen, role in the multiverse, need to give the character a meaningful purpose in Avengers: Doomsday. Fortunately, Loki’s extensive knowledge of the multiverse makes him naturally suited to the story, and his current position as the God of Stories means Doctor Doom’s actions across different realities will directly affect him. The key now is whether the filmmakers can effectively continue Loki’s narrative, especially considering Marvel might have long-term plans for Tom Hiddleston’s character beyond the current saga.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
