While discussing his new Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man, Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy has responded to the ongoing speculation about him potentially playing Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, and it appears he’s definitively answered the question.
For a while now, there have been rumors that Murphy might be cast as the villain. He’s denied being involved in the show before, but people still suspect he’s part of it.
When asked by The Times if he was playing the villainous role similar to Voldemort, Cillian Murphy firmly denied it, even requesting that the denial be highlighted as a headline.
I remember reading that Cillian Murphy claimed he was totally in the dark about the buzz surrounding him taking on the role. He also admitted it would be a huge challenge to follow Ralph Fiennes, who was brilliant in the previous movies.

Despite previously suggesting he hadn’t been cast, Fiennes recently created some confusion by mentioning he thought Cillian Murphy had already been chosen, and that he thought Murphy was a great fit for the role.
It seems Fiennes likely reached an incorrect conclusion after reading the same reports that fans had access to, assuming Murphy is being truthful.
It’s not surprising that Voldemort hasn’t been cast yet. Ralph Fiennes, who played him, didn’t appear in the movies until the fourth film, The Goblet of Fire. The HBO series is planning to cover that part of the story in its fourth season.

The first season of the new Harry Potter series, based on the book The Philosopher’s Stone, is expected to premiere in early 2027, according to HBO’s Casey Bloys.
JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism for her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a detailed essay explaining her views on sex and gender, but this was widely challenged and disputed by LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall.
J.K. Rowling has expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In that post, she stated that she doesn’t believe in the concept of transgender children and doesn’t agree with the idea that someone’s gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, along with other actors from the Harry Potter films, have spoken out to support the transgender community and express disagreement with J.K. Rowling’s views. However, some cast members, like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent, have publicly defended Rowling amidst the criticism she’s faced.
The Harry Potter TV series will premiere in early 2027 on HBO Max.
