Terminator: Survivors Studio Discusses its Vision for an Open World That’s “Moving Around You”

Nacon Studio Milan recently announced another delay for their game, Terminator: Survivors, and shared their development plans. In a Steam update, the studio explained they’re focused on creating a truly authentic Terminator experience and detailed how they intend to achieve that.

Nacon Studio Milan is creating Terminator: Survivors with three main goals: a vast open world to explore, a fresh story set within the Terminator universe, and a carefully crafted depiction of the famous T-800. Building this open world has been the biggest hurdle, as the developers want players to have freedom while still experiencing a compelling narrative. To achieve this, they’re making sure the game world evolves and changes as the player progresses.

We strive for the same balance between exciting action and a compelling story as the original films – perhaps even more so. However, creating that balance is more challenging when players have the freedom to explore and act as they please. An open world has significant consequences, so we’ve focused on making the world feel alive and dynamic, reacting to the player’s actions. This includes everything from how players move through the environment, whether on foot or in vehicles, to how Skynet actively searches for survivors after Judgment Day, and the interesting locations players can discover.

This game gives players a lot of freedom in how they tackle challenges. You can choose to go in with heavy firepower, use sniper or shotgun tactics, or even try to sneak past enemies without being detected. There are many different ways to succeed in any situation.

The team behind Terminator: Survivors plans to share more details about the game gradually. Their next update will focus on creating the game’s world. They’ll also explain where the game fits within the Terminator series’ timeline and how players’ decisions will impact both the game’s story and the larger Terminator universe.

Last December, Marco Ponte, the creative director, announced that the studio had decided against adding a co-op mode to the game, along with plans for early access. He explained that this decision was made to ensure players had a true “Terminator” experience with high-quality shooting and exploration.

The game Terminator: Survivors was initially planned to launch in Early Access in 2024, but has been pushed back to 2025. Nacon Studio Milan hasn’t yet announced a new release date. The game is being developed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
