Samson: A Tyndalston Story Studio Wants Players to Learn Street Names, Manage Hour-to-Hour Pressure

So, I’m getting super hyped for Liquid Swords’ first game, Samson: A Tyndalston Story, which is coming out on April 8th! I was reading an interview with Donald Young, one of the senior designers, over at WCCFTech, and he dropped a bunch of details. He talked about what kind of missions we can expect, how the gameplay will actually feel, and how the team really focused on making things intense and impactful rather than just huge and sprawling. Sounds awesome!

When discussing gameplay in Samson: A Tyndalston Story, Young explained that much of the game will center around Samson’s car, a special vehicle called the Magnum Opus. He confirmed that players will only drive cars, and they’ll need to keep the Magnum Opus in working order by repairing it after battles and refuelling at gas stations throughout the city.

According to Young, The Magnum Opus features several special mechanics to aid Samson during his adventures. Players can use a ‘Kickdown’ action to shift into a lower gear, boosting acceleration and engine speed – perfect for ramming opponents or drifting. Samson can also turn off the car’s engine to evade police, and even store a weapon in the trunk for…persuasive visits.

In Samson: A Tyndalston Story, players will encounter eight different types of missions, with an equal mix of on-foot and vehicle-based gameplay. Each chapter will offer unique challenges and scenarios, and the developers have worked to keep the mission variety engaging. For example, ‘Beatdown’ missions can occur in over 30 distinct combat arenas across the cities. The game also features a ‘Story Deck’ system, which generates random, smaller story events throughout Tyndalston, adding to the world’s dynamic feel.

Okay, so imagine I’m chasing someone down a back alley, and I stumble on a civilian getting roughed up. Do I risk losing the target – and the money from the job – to help them out? Or do I just keep going to make sure I can pay my debts? That’s the kind of tough decision we want players to face during missions. It’s all about making choices and dealing with the consequences.

The game emphasizes impactful moments over a large scope. A key theme is the constant pressure felt by the character Samson, forcing players to focus on making the most of every moment. This pressure manifests in different ways: intense combat creates immediate stress, managing risky but rewarding Jobs adds pressure over several hours, and the looming central debt creates long-term anxiety. If the player falls behind, they’ll face consequences like debt collectors. Essentially, Samson is constantly juggling problems, reflecting the realities of life in Tyndalston.

As you play, you’ll uncover more of the city of Tyndalston. Exploring different areas will give you a better understanding of the challenges its people face and why those problems exist. The developers at Liquid Swords also want you to become familiar with Tyndalston, so you’ll start to recognize streets and landmarks.
