5 Marvel Teams That Deserve Their Own Multiplayer Game

As a huge Marvel fan, whenever I think about a Marvel game, I immediately picture playing as my favorite hero, or teaming up with a group like the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy. We’ve seen some awesome multiplayer games built around those team-ups, but I think a game that really focuses on just one specific team could be something truly special. Imagine playing with a tight-knit group of heroes, working together and using all their powers to tackle tough challenges – that would be incredible!

The Ultimate Alliance series is a great example of a fun Marvel multiplayer game where lots of heroes and villains team up. This action-packed, four-player game lets you play as characters from all over the Marvel universe, often in unexpected combinations. Just like the X-Men tackling mutant problems or the Guardians of the Galaxy facing cosmic threats, a big part of the enjoyment comes from seeing how different teams handle unique challenges compared to each other.

5. The Champions

The Champions are a team of young superheroes in the Marvel Universe. They came together after the second ‘Civil War’ storyline, which caused big changes, similar to the first one. The team was founded by Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales (Spider-Man), and Nova (Sam Alexander). Other members included a new Hulk named Amadeus Cho, Viv Vision, and a younger version of Cyclops who had been brought forward in time.

The Champions team thrives on its newer heroes – characters like Gwenpool, Ironheart, Falcon, and Patriot – who are all eager to establish themselves. A multiplayer game focusing on these heroes could showcase their development into a major team, potentially using RPG elements to allow players to strengthen their characters over time. Gameplay could draw inspiration from Marvel’s Midnight Suns, emphasizing the team’s realistic relationships and interactions, a contrast to the established legacies of more iconic heroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America.

4. Thunderbolts

The Thunderbolts started as a Marvel team of villains pretending to be heroes. Baron Zemo formed the group with the intention of filling the void left by the Avengers and Fantastic Four, who everyone believed were gone. Since then, the Thunderbolts have become a common gathering place for villains, either working towards their own goals or taking on missions for the government. A game based on the Thunderbolts could draw inspiration from the recent Marvel movie, but the rich history of the comic books offers the potential for an even more compelling team of characters.

The Thunderbolts, a sometimes overlooked Marvel team, could be led by characters like Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin), Red Hulk, Winter Soldier, or Kingpin in a game. Players could also control characters like U.S. Agent, Rhino, Venom, Elektra, Songbird, Atlas, or MACH-IV, each with unique abilities based on their powers. Like DC’s Suicide Squad, a Thunderbolts game would feature Marvel characters who don’t usually get to be the heroes.

3. Inhumans

What makes a team like The Inhumans interesting is the complex political web created by its characters—it’s similar to the intrigue seen in shows like Game of Thrones. Black Bolt and Medusa aren’t just leaders; they’re royalty, and the unique powers of those around them lead to complicated relationships and power struggles that would be fun to explore in a game. An RPG with a party system, like Baldur’s Gate 3 or Final Fantasy, could really capture the feel of an Inhumans comic.

Inhumans tells its stories in a more sophisticated way than X-Men, especially when it comes to political intrigue within its royal family – something you wouldn’t find at Xavier’s school. A multiplayer game based on Inhumans could let players create their own character and become part of this super-powered world, with their transformation by the Terrigen Mist attracting attention from powerful figures. The choices players make and who they decide to trust could be just as engaging as the action, though exciting super-powered gameplay would also be a key feature.

2. The Fantastic Four

While the Fantastic Four have appeared in some games, they’ve never had a truly comprehensive title dedicated to their rich history. Past games have been simple beat-em-ups, short action adventures, or tied to movies, failing to capture the depth of their epic, sci-fi adventures. The Fantastic Four’s unique stories actually lend themselves perfectly to a compelling and expansive multiplayer game.

Okay, so the Fantastic Four – Reed, Ben, Johnny, and Sue – they’re perfect as a four-player team for a game. But honestly, it’d be awesome if they added more characters from their world! Imagine being able to play as Spider-Man, or even Franklin and Valeria Richards! It would make the game’s character list way more interesting and still feel connected to the core Fantastic Four story.

1. The Defenders

The Defenders are Marvel’s heroes who focus on realistic, down-to-earth problems—like street-level corruption—instead of universe-threatening events. They’re perfect for a gritty, action-packed game in the style of Streets of Rage, a detailed beat-em-up where players could team up and control characters like The Punisher, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, or Iron Fist to fight crime in the darker corners of the Marvel world.

The idea of playing as The Defenders – constantly fighting off waves of ninjas from The Hand, Kingpin’s thugs, and other dangers – is a strong one with a lot of potential. Compared to other Marvel team-ups, The Defenders offer a particularly good mix of recognizable heroes and villains, making them ideal for a fun, cooperative multiplayer game with friends.
