Today, it’s difficult to believe, but when Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she caused a lot of debate among fans. Initial reactions were mixed, and it took time for viewers to connect with her character. A bigger question, though, was how she fit into the larger Star Wars story. Since she wasn’t present in Revenge of the Sith, many wondered what happened to her and even predicted she would die during the Clone Wars.
Thirteen years ago today, an episode of The Clone Wars called “The Wrong Jedi” revealed that Ahsoka Tano didn’t die as many believed. Instead, she left the Jedi Order because she’d lost faith in the Jedi Council. They wrongly accused her of bombing the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and refused to believe her innocence, which she found deeply upsetting. This led Ahsoka to leave the Jedi, and further eroded Anakin Skywalker’s trust in the Council as well.
Ahsoka Proved She Was So Much Greater Than Anakin
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always found Yoda’s decision to give Anakin a Padawan really interesting. It felt like Yoda was trying to teach Anakin the toughest lesson of all: learning to let go of the people you love and fear losing. He sensed Anakin was still struggling with attachment, and maybe even thought knighting him so quickly during the Clone Wars was a mistake. Giving him a student was Yoda’s way of hoping Anakin would learn through teaching. But honestly, I think Yoda underestimated just how deeply Anakin’s attachments ran – it was a much bigger issue than he realized.
Anakin struggled because he was torn between his intense love for Padmé and his loyalty to the Jedi Order. Ahsoka also lost faith in the Jedi, but she followed her own principles anyway. Interestingly, this made her a better Jedi than Anakin, as she refused to sacrifice her morals for the sake of belonging. As Kristin Baver points out in her book, Skywalkers: A Family At War, this difference is key.
Ahsoka did something Anakin Skywalker couldn’t bring himself to do: leave the Jedi Order. Like Ahsoka, Anakin had grown disillusioned with the Jedi and repeatedly broke their rules, believing he was acting justly and following his heart. However, Anakin couldn’t fully commit to leaving. The Jedi had been his entire life – they rescued him from slavery and gave him a place to belong. Despite understanding Ahsoka’s reasons, he felt too indebted to the Jedi to walk away.
Ultimately, Yoda aimed to teach the importance of releasing what you fear losing. However, it was Ahsoka who truly learned this lesson, bravely facing the future, while Anakin remained trapped by his feelings of being left behind.
Anakin Was Destroyed By His Attachments, But Ahsoka Was Not
What’s remarkable about Ahsoka is that she avoided the fate of her master. Anakin was undone by his strong emotional connections, but Ahsoka wasn’t. Anakin essentially wanted it both ways – to maintain relationships the Jedi Code forbade, creating a conflict he refused to resolve. He was dishonest with the Jedi Council, preferring to live a contradiction rather than face the difficult choice of letting go.
The situation was doomed from the start. Even if Anakin hadn’t turned to the dark side, things still wouldn’t have worked out. A happier outcome would have meant Padmé giving birth to twin children strong in the Force, and their existence would have eventually been revealed. Other Jedi were already looking the other way, and we now know Obi-Wan Kenobi secretly knew about Anakin and Padmé’s relationship but chose to ignore it, likely because of his own struggles with forming attachments. However, they couldn’t have kept that up once the twins were born.
Ultimately, the conflict between Anakin’s conflicting loyalties overwhelmed him, leading to his downfall. Ahsoka, however, avoided this fate. She stayed true to her principles and left the Jedi Order, even though it was difficult, demonstrating that she had surpassed her master. She was able to let go of her attachments—something Anakin never could. While no longer an official member of the Jedi, she remained a Jedi in spirit, having proven her dedication to their ideals.
