Star Trek: SAM Bonds With 4 Iconic Characters From Deep Space Nine & Voyager

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 8 – “The Life of the Stars”

A fan-favorite character from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has formed a connection with four well-known characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. The eighth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “The Life of the Stars,” and created by Gaia Violo & Jane Maggs with direction from Andi Armaganian, marks a significant turning point for Kerrice Brooks’ character, Series Acclimation Mil (SAM).

SAM, a holographic character, first appeared in the premiere of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy when she was only four months old. Created by the Kasqian Makers (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) as a bridge between their kind and organic lifeforms, SAM was programmed to appear as a 17-year-old. Despite being accepted by her friends, the Makers hadn’t given her the real-life experiences necessary to navigate everyday situations.

Throughout the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the artificial intelligence known as SAM fully adapted to her position as the Emissary of Kasq. However, she was severely damaged by phaser fire during the sixth episode. When The Doctor (Robert Picardo) and Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) returned SAM to Kasq, the holographic cadet formed her most important connection with a well-known character from the Star Trek universe.

Starfleet Academy’s SAM Is Now Bonded With 4 Star Trek Icons

Series Acclimation Mil is now strongly connected to several beloved characters from past Star Trek shows, including Captain Benjamin Sisko, Jake Sisko, and Dax from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager. Unlike her fellow Starfleet Academy classmates, Mil has personal ties to these Star Trek icons.

In the fifth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “Series Acclimation Mil,” the character investigates Captain Sisko’s disappearance while trying to understand his special connection to the Prophets of Bajor. She learns a lot about Sisko from two key people: Professor Illa Dax, the current host of the ancient Dax symbiont, and Jake Sisko, Benjamin Sisko’s son.

Honestly, the biggest surprise for me wasn’t even the connection between SAM and the Siskos or Dax – it was learning that The Doctor is actually Series Acclimation Mil’s father! Throughout Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, SAM really wanted The Doctor to be her mentor, but he kept pushing her away. It turned out he did that because of something deeply personal: he’d lost a holographic daughter back on Voyager, and it was too painful for him to get close to anyone again. It was such a moving reveal!

In the eighth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, The Doctor officially became a father to SAM after SAM’s core programming was restored. For seventeen years, The Doctor raised SAM on Kasq, providing the parental bond they both needed. They then returned to Starfleet Academy as a family, and because they exist as digital beings, they have the potential to remain father and daughter forever.

SAM Could Evolve In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Series Acclimation Mil seemed like her cheerful self when she came back to Starfleet Academy, but she might have changed. SAM now remembers two different lives: her time as a cadet at the Academy, and the 17 years she spent on Kasq with her father, The Doctor.

While Mil retains memories of her previous life, returning to Starfleet Academy feels like a fresh start. She brings a new level of experience, knowledge, and maturity. The original SAM was essentially programmed as a teenager, but in many ways, she was like a baby, learning to navigate a complex world she didn’t fully grasp.

Over the final two episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1, and continuing into season 2, we’ll likely see a more complex and nuanced side of SAM 2.0. The series is now giving her a backstory that fits her age, and a supportive relationship with The Doctor. SAM represents both the best qualities of iconic characters and the optimistic spirit of Star Trek’s vision for the future.
