Okay, so Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters kicks off with our team messing with the Axis Mundi again – that mysterious portal. They introduced it last season, and it initially seems like it’s where all the Titans live, you know, the kaiju’s home base. But if you’ve seen the films, you quickly realize that’s a bit of a red herring. The Axis Mundi isn’t the home; it’s more like a doorway, a kind of in-between place, a world connecting other worlds.
The Axis Mundi and the Hollow Earth are central mysteries in the Monsterverse, and understanding them is crucial for following the story of Monarch Season 2. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about these important locations.
The Hollow Earth is the Home of the Titans
The giant creatures in the Monsterverse come from a hidden world beneath the surface called the Hollow Earth. Scientists first hinted at its existence in Kong: Skull Island, suggesting the Titans lived underground, but we didn’t actually see it until Godzilla vs. Kong. That movie revealed the Hollow Earth is a huge underground world with a thriving ecosystem. While life on the surface gets energy from the sun, the Hollow Earth is powered by a unique blue energy source – a mysterious force that seems to be atomic in nature.
The story of the Hollow Earth is full of unanswered questions. We don’t know why the Titans abandoned it, but it might be connected to an ancient conflict between the first Godzilla and Kong. This war was likely a fight for dominance between their species. Some scientists within the story believe Skull Island, Kong’s home, was originally inside the Hollow Earth and somehow ended up on the surface. This could have been a way to save the Kongs from extinction at the hands of Godzilla’s ancestors.
The idea of a Hollow Earth comes from many ancient myths about worlds beneath our feet. In the Monsterverse, this underground realm is reached through “vile vortices” – essentially wormholes that powerful beings called Titans can either use or create for travel between the surface world and the Hollow Earth. Interestingly, the concept of these “vile vortices” originally came from unexplained phenomena investigator Ivan T. Sanderson and his society, who identified twelve locations around the globe where strange events reportedly happen. It’s fun to see how these real-world ideas have been incorporated into the Monsterverse’s story.
The Axis Mundi is a World Between Worlds

Let’s talk about the Axis Mundi, which was first seen in Season 1 of Monarch. According to Chris Black, one of the show’s creators, they developed this concept to avoid overlapping with the storylines in the Monsterverse movies. The Hollow Earth is a key element of the film universe, and the creators wanted to save that for the big screen. As Black told ScreenRant:
We didn’t really disagree, but we did have several conversations about the concept of a Hollow Earth, as it’s a key part of the story in the films. We had to be cautious about what we revealed to avoid spoiling any future movie plots, since our show will finish airing before the new film is released. They wanted to ensure we coordinated with them on this.
As a critic, I’ve been following the development of this new world-building, and what’s really interesting is the creative team decided to carve out a specific corner of the Hollow Earth. They’ve dubbed it ‘Axis Mundi’ – a clever name thought up by Matt Fraction – and it’s designed to be a unique space, separate but connected to the broader Hollow Earth. The idea was to give themselves a dedicated playground for storytelling that felt distinct from the main feature films. However, they also realized the Hollow Earth itself is vast enough to accommodate everything. Think of it like Middle-earth – you’ve got the Shire, Mordor, all these different regions within one world. They believe, and the feature film team agrees, that the Hollow Earth is expansive enough for all these stories to coexist comfortably.
The Axis Mundi can be thought of as a transitional space – a pathway that allows dangerous forces to reach the Hollow Earth. This likely explains the unusual way time works there, as it seems to flow much differently. The shifting gravity within the Axis Mundi could also explain how Lee survived a significant fall without being hurt. As Season 2 of Monarch unfolds, we’ll probably see more of the Axis Mundi, and Black’s statements suggest we might eventually get to see the Hollow Earth itself.
