Horror movies that put a dark spin on beloved childhood characters are becoming increasingly popular, and a new trailer reveals the latest example. The creators of the terrifying Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey are back with another violent story, expanding their frightening take on classic tales. This time, they’re turning Pinocchio into a killer.
The horror film Pinocchio: Unstrung offers a dark and violent twist on the classic tale of a puppet who wants to be a real boy. Featuring horror icon Richard Brake as Gepetto, this version sees Pinocchio achieving his dream through a gruesome murder spree, collecting human parts to become ‘real.’ Inspired by a sinister take on Jiminy Cricket, voiced by Robert Englund, Pinocchio’s journey to life quickly becomes a nightmare. Jagged Edge Productions released the film’s trailer on YouTube (as reported by Variety), along with a short description of the plot.
This is a twisted and mature take on the classic Pinocchio story, following the puppet’s frightening transformation into a real boy.
Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who previously directed Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, helms Pinocchio: Unstrung. He shares that a physical puppet was actually used on set for the film, and the story is told through Pinocchio’s own, often warped, perspective.
We created Pinocchio as a fully functioning robot to make him feel lifelike. The film is a dark take on the classic coming-of-age story, told through Pinocchio’s eyes. It’s about a puppet trying to find his independence while being controlled by unsettling characters, including a menacing ‘Jiminy Cricket’ played by Robert Englund and an obsessive Geppetto portrayed by Richard Brake.
This is a developing story with more details to follow.
