Square Enix, a Japanese game company, is bringing back a PlayStation 1 game that hasn’t been re-released for 25 years. Originally released in 2001 only for PlayStation 1, this new version will be available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X. A version for the newer Nintendo Switch 2 or older Xbox consoles isn’t currently planned. The game will cost $10 to play.
Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix, originally released for the PlayStation 1 in 2001, was developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment and published by Eidos Interactive. While Square Enix now owns the rights to the game after acquiring Eidos, they’ve partnered with developer Implicit Conversions and publisher Limited Run Games to bring this re-release to life.
New Improvements to the Classic PS1 Game
This isn’t a complete overhaul of the game, but the developers have updated this 25-year-old action-adventure classic to work better on modern systems. These improvements include features like save states, widescreen support, Achievements/Trophies, and filters to simulate older CRT screens. Otherwise, the gameplay remains exactly as it was on the original PlayStation. This is similar to what the same team did last year with the first Fear Effect game.
A Forgotten PS1 Exclusive Game
The Fear Effect series is largely overlooked today. It began in 2000 with the first Fear Effect game, followed by Fear Effect 2 in 2001. Interestingly, Fear Effect 2 is actually a prequel, telling a story that happened before the original game. Both games were well-received, scoring 85 and 82 on GameRankings respectively. However, the series went dormant until 2018 with the release of Fear Effect Sedna. While Fear Effect 2 looked to the past, Sedna attempted to continue the story as a sequel—but it wasn’t very successful. With scores ranging from 42 to 50 on Metacritic, it was one of the lowest-rated games of that year, and the series hasn’t seen a release since.
Although the series isn’t continuing, the original two games are still fun if you like action-adventure games similar to those on the PlayStation 1. They haven’t aged perfectly, but are still enjoyable. Expect to spend around 10 to 25 hours playing, depending on how you play and whether you try to complete everything.
