Recent issues with Shogakukan’s Manga ONE app have led to worries that a popular manga series might be ending. Many social media posts are claiming the manga has been canceled, causing concern among fans.
The issue started when Shogakukan admitted that the editors at their Manga ONE app helped hide information about manga artist Shoichi Yamamoto. Reports show that even though the editorial team knew Yamamoto (also known as Kazuaki Kurita) had been convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting a child, they let him publish a new manga, Jojin Kamen, under the name Hajime Ichiro and continue working on it for nearly four years.
After Shogakukan admitted wrongdoing, many creators with work on Manga ONE asked for a clear explanation. Several well-known authors and artists responded by stopping their ongoing series or removing their content from the app, as a way to protest the actions of the editorial team.
The creators of Frieren, Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, were part of a larger group of artists who removed their work from a digital platform. This led to rumors on social media that the Frieren manga had been canceled or that Yamada and Abe had stopped publishing with Shogakukan.
The Current Status of the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Manga Series
To figure out what’s happening with the series right now, it’s important to know the difference between the Manga ONE app and where the main story is usually published.
I’m a huge fan of following manga digitally, and Manga ONE is great for reading chapters on my phone. But just so you know, it’s not where Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End actually originates. That honor goes to Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine! You can still find it listed as one of their ongoing series right on the magazine’s official website.
In addition to the weekly magazine release, the series is also available on Sunday Webry, Shogakukan’s official digital platform for comics and manga. Launched in 2016 by three Shogakukan magazines – Weekly Shonen Sunday, Monthly Shonen Sunday, and Monthly Sunday GX – Sunday Webry currently features all 147 chapters of the manga and hasn’t removed any content, despite rumors of cancellation circulating online.
This means the team behind the Frieren manga is still working with Shogakukan, and the series hasn’t been canceled. It was simply removed from the Manga ONE app. Currently, the creators, Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, haven’t publicly addressed the situation with Manga ONE, but they are continuing their work with Shogakukan.
Frieren Continues Indefinite Hiatus Following Official October 2025 Update
I’m a huge fan of Frieren, and thankfully it hasn’t been canceled! But there’s been a pause in new chapters – and it actually started before all the recent news came out. It’s been on break since October 2025, right after Chapter 147 was published. The editors said they needed to slow things down a bit and make sure both Yamada-sensei and Abe-sensei are doing okay, which is totally understandable!
I’m really excited to share that even though we don’t have a firm date yet, new chapters are still planned for Weekly Shonen Sunday as soon as the creators are ready to continue! And if you’re a fan of the anime, Season 2 finally premiered on January 16, 2026, which is fantastic!
