Okay, so as a big fan of Hogwarts Legacy, I’m feeling a little bummed right now. That recent update was… not what anyone wanted to hear. Honestly, sometimes silence is worse, and that’s how it feels right now. I mean, Hogwarts Legacy came out in 2023, and we’ve been waiting almost three years for any news on the sequel! It’s super frustrating when you’re excited for the next adventure in the Wizarding World and you just… don’t hear anything. I get why a lot of Harry Potter fans are disappointed.
While it’s understandably frustrating that Warner Bros. won’t release new games in major franchises, including Hogwarts Legacy, until at least 2027, this delay could be a positive sign. It gives developers time to learn from the first Hogwarts Legacy game and make a better sequel. Although fans will have to wait longer, this extra time is actually good news – it’s important for the future of the Hogwarts Legacy series and ensures future games are even better.
Hogwarts Legacy 2’s Not Releasing Until At Least 2027 Is Good News

Warner Bros. has faced significant challenges with its video games recently, and that’s putting it mildly. The poor performance of games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and other major failures in 2024 led to substantial financial losses and forced the company to rethink its strategy, even considering a potential sale to Netflix. As JB Perrette, Warner Bros.’s head of streaming and gaming, explained to Variety, 2024 was essentially “a year of reset” – a time when they tried to launch too many games based on their existing properties and quickly realized it wasn’t sustainable.
To address significant losses from the previous year, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav indicated that profits should begin to recover in 2027 or 2028, coinciding with the return of some of the company’s most popular franchises. While he didn’t specify which franchises he meant, many believe Hogwarts Legacy is a key part of this plan, especially given its expected connection to the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO. This likely means a sequel, Hogwarts Legacy 2, won’t be released for at least another year, and possibly two. Further delays are possible, particularly if Warner Bros. continues to plan Hogwarts Legacy 2 as an ongoing live service game.
I’m really glad to hear that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy isn’t coming out for at least another year. It’s reassuring that Warner Bros. isn’t rushing into development, even though they could have, given how much of a base they already have. In fact, they seem to be being too careful – the lack of plans for downloadable content for the first game, or reports that they’ve cancelled it, suggests they didn’t fully believe in how successful it would be.
It’s possible Avalanche Software prioritized making the best possible sequel instead of adding more content to Hogwarts Legacy, potentially delaying the next game. However, this extra development time should allow them to create an outstanding open-world magical RPG and address the issues in Hogwarts Legacy. If they follow a similar approach to Marvel’s Spider-Man – reusing the world but telling a new story, improving gameplay, and adding fresh ideas – hopefully, this extended development will result in a truly definitive Harry Potter experience.
Skipping 2026 Is A Smart Move For Hogwarts Legacy

There are many good reasons to hold off on releasing Hogwarts Legacy 2 besides just improving how the game plays. Since the sequel has only just been announced, and we haven’t seen much of it yet, launching it in 2026 would likely mean releasing it very late in the year to allow for marketing. This could put it in direct competition with Grand Theft Auto 6, and it might not be able to achieve the same massive sales as the first Hogwarts Legacy game did in 2023.
Delaying the release to 2027 makes sense because there aren’t many big game launches currently scheduled for that time. This gives Hogwarts Legacy a better opportunity to stand out, especially since it won’t be competing with rare blockbuster titles like GTA 6. Plus, this timing would coincide with the premiere of the Harry Potter HBO series, which has been moved to early 2027 after originally being planned for 2026. Like they did with The Matrix, Warner Bros. seems to be building a lot of excitement for Harry Potter next year, with both the new show and the Hogwarts Legacy sequel giving fans plenty to look forward to.
I’m not personally interested in the show, but I can see why this marketing approach would work really well, and Warner Bros. should definitely take advantage of it. My main concern is that they don’t rush the development of Hogwarts Legacy just to maximize profits. Another year of work would likely benefit Hogwarts Legacy 2 and ensure it’s a strong release. However, if development takes too long, Warner Bros. needs to delay the game to avoid disappointing fans and critics, and to protect the positive reputation earned by the first game. It’s hard to say if they’ll make the right decision, especially considering they released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, so it’s really anyone’s guess.
