Seth MacFarlane, the creator and voice of the main character in the show Ted, has discussed the series’ future on Peacock. He stated that, as of now, there aren’t any firm plans to make more seasons beyond the upcoming second season.
Seth MacFarlane has stated that there aren’t currently any plans to move forward with the live-action Ted series. However, Peacock is working on an animated Ted series, which will continue the story after the events of the two Ted movies he directed. The live-action series, in contrast, was intended as a prequel.
The first season of Ted received better reviews than either of the Ted movies. Critics gave the series a 74% approval rating, and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes liked it even more, with a score of 90%. The first Ted movie earned a 68% rating from critics and 73% from viewers, while Ted 2 wasn’t as well-received, scoring only 45% from critics and 50% from viewers.
Okay, so it’s a bit of a shock that Seth MacFarlane and Peacock seem hesitant to continue with the Ted series. I get it, though. The premise, being a prequel, has a natural endpoint – they can only go so far back before bumping into the events of the movies. But honestly? I’m not entirely buying MacFarlane’s claim that there are ‘no direct plans’ for more. I suspect there’s more to the story than he’s letting on, and he’s keeping his options open.
The most likely reason for this is that Peacock doesn’t want to pay the high production costs of another live-action Ted season. The show is reportedly very expensive to make, largely because the main character is created using CG animation. This could be why they approved the animated Ted series – it allows them to continue the franchise with a smaller budget.
Ted Season 2 Is Likely the Show’s Final Season
Okay, so Season 2 of Ted picks up with John Bennet as a senior in high school, and of course, his hilariously inappropriate teddy bear, Ted, is still right there with him. They’re still living with John’s family – it’s pretty chaotic, honestly! You’ve got his dad, Matty, who’s this loud, working-class guy from Boston, his really sweet and giving mom, Susan, and his cousin Blaire, who always speaks her mind. It’s a fun, messy family dynamic, and Ted’s definitely a part of it!
Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Ted, also directs the series and provides the voice for Ted himself. The show’s cast includes Max Burkholder, Alanna Ubach, Scott Grimes, and Giorgia Whigham.
Ted Will Continue In Animated Form
In a way, Ted may be better served as an animated series. After all, MacFarlane previously revealed.
In 2024, Seth MacFarlane recalled a confusing time after the Time Warner and Turner merger. He explained that the company was unsure how to utilize its creative team, leading to a period of inactivity and disorganization. They kept everyone employed, fearing they’d need artists and writers when things stabilized, so the staff was simply asked to pitch one new animated show idea per week. MacFarlane revealed that the show Ted started as one of these weekly pitches.
Ted Season 2 drops on Peacock, in its entirety, on March 5.
