5 Best Predator Games, Ranked

The 1987 film Predator, with its iconic action sequences, always seemed ripe for a video game adaptation. Over the years, Predators have appeared in many games, but most have been part of the Aliens vs. Predator series. We’ve decided to focus on games where the Predator is the main threat, so we’ve compiled a list of the five best Predator games, ranking them based on how well they were received by critics when they first came out, how many copies they sold, and how popular they are overall. It wasn’t an easy task, as there aren’t a lot of games starring the Predator on its own!

5) Predator: Hunting Grounds

The Predator franchise doesn’t have a lot of video games, and even fewer have been released recently. The newest one, Predator: Hunting Grounds, came out in 2020 and was available on all platforms at the time. It’s a multiplayer game where players, including characters like Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch Shafer from the movies, take on missions in remote jungles while being hunted by a Predator. It was the first Predator game in ten years, but it wasn’t a hit with either players or critics. Sales were low, and reviews criticized it as being rough around the edges and disorganized, though it’s a decent modern take on the Predator itself.

4) Predator 2 (1990)

Although Predator 2 isn’t considered the strongest film in the series, it actually inspired two video game adaptations. The first one came out in 1990 and is a fast-paced, on-rails shooter loosely based on the movie’s story. Players control Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (played by Danny Glover in the film) as he battles both the Colombian Cartel and a Jamaican gang, all while being hunted by the Predator. The Amiga version was particularly impressive for its time, and the game is still enjoyable as a classic rail shooter. Danny Glover gave his permission for his character to be featured, but other actors didn’t seem to mind how their characters appeared. Overall, the game captured the movie’s story pretty well and was a lot of fun when it first came out.

2) Predator 2 (1992)

In 1992, a new video game based on Predator 2 was released for Sega consoles. It originally came out on the Genesis, and was later adapted for the Game Gear and Master System. Players can freely explore the game world, navigating intense, bullet-filled action while trying to evade the Predator. The game focuses on rescuing hostages, mirroring the movie’s storyline, and offers a solid gameplay experience. With its unique angled perspective, it presented a more engaging challenge than the first Predator game and provides a fun way to experience the franchise’s universe.

2) Predator

A side-scrolling action game based on the movie Predator was released in the same year as the film. While available on multiple platforms, most players experienced it on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game starts with the player unarmed, requiring them to find weapons – a similar setup to the beginning of the 1987 game Metal Gear. The game generally received positive reviews, particularly the versions for the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. It’s known for being difficult but featuring impressive graphics for its time, making it a standout example of a quality movie-based game – a rare find in the 1980s when these types of games were often poorly made.

1) Predators

Okay, so I checked out this mobile game called Predators that came out around the same time as the 2010 movie. Basically, you are the Predator, hunting down all the characters from the film in a third-person action game. There are 31 levels to play through, and you get to use all the classic Yautja weapons – the Smart Disc and Wristblades are awesome! You can switch between normal and thermal vision, which is super helpful, and they even included the Super Predators from the movie. From what I’ve read, critics actually thought this was one of the better Predator games, and it sold pretty well initially, though it went on sale quickly to get more people to pick it up.
