Christy Carlson Romano Shares Update After Cancer Screening Test

Christy Carlson Romano is taking her health one step at a time.

Following her February announcement that both she and her husband, Brendan Rooney, underwent cancer screenings – his results were negative, but hers weren’t – Christy is now sharing more details about what she’s discovered.

“I’ve got my tests back, my initial tests back, and it is definitely better than what I feared,” she said in a March 2 Instagram video. “But I do have a lot more tests to take and I’m going to be meeting with an oncologist this week. One thing is for sure—over the last year and change I had two very significant health scares. I think the universe has been showing me that I need to take my health seriously.”

Christy, age 41, has found writing to be a very helpful and healing process lately, and she’s enjoyed it so much that she’s starting a Substack newsletter. She plans to share updates on her new focus on health and well-being, along with her general thoughts and ideas.

As she put it, “It’s just going to be me.”

In her first post on Substack, Christy shared more details about her test results and what she plans to do next.

Christy had a blood test that searches for cancer cells. The test found some unusual cells in her blood, and her doctor believes this could mean she may already have cancer that can be diagnosed and staged.

Fortunately, a follow-up PET scan showed no signs of tumors or cancer. Christy explained that she will now begin a treatment plan to remove the unusual cells.

I’ve been researching a really interesting approach to wellness lately, and it’s something I’m calling a ‘protocol.’ Basically, it’s an eight-week plan focused on boosting your immune system with supplements, and then finishing with a five-day fast. The idea is to really give your body a chance to clear out any stray cancer cells – I like to think of it like a tree and its seeds. If you have any unwanted cells, you want to filter them out at the source, and this protocol is designed to do just that.

She also mentioned needing to make significant, long-term lifestyle adjustments, like carefully tracking her diet, beverages, and skincare products.

Overall, Christy—mother to nine-year-old Isabella and seven-year-old Sofia with Brendan—feels thankful for the support she receives from her family, friends, and wider community.

She ended her video with a heartfelt thanks, saying, “I truly appreciate all your support – it really helped me through a difficult period.”

In February, Christy shared her initial screening test results, explaining they weren’t a final diagnosis, but she was scheduled for a PET scan to learn more.

Although she didn’t want to rush to judgment, the findings were still quite shocking.

Visibly upset, Christy shared a video on Instagram on February 17th, saying, “I know some people might think I’m overreacting, but cancer is a really serious disease. I just… I have two young daughters.”

Even though Christy felt anxious and a little frightened by the results, she was making an effort to stay optimistic.

Christy explained that she’s focusing on getting through each day and appreciating the good things in her life. She’s thankful for her supportive family and is determined to find answers and share updates when she can.

This prompted her to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. Schumer explained that she wouldn’t have known about the condition without the online feedback. She recently shared that she’s relieved to learn her case of Cushing syndrome is temporary and she is healthy, calling it “the greatest news imaginable.”

She suddenly developed stroke-like symptoms, initially struggling to respond when Justin asked if she was okay. She quickly lost the ability to speak and noticed the right side of her face drooping.

Although her speech and facial movement eventually returned, Hailey went to the hospital for evaluation. Tests revealed she had experienced a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack) caused by a small blood clot in her brain.

Further investigation at UCLA discovered Hailey had a patent foramen ovale (PFO), a hole in her heart. Doctors determined the blood clot had traveled through this hole and reached her brain, causing the TIA.

Hailey underwent a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now recovering well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which caused temporary paralysis on one side of his face. This forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained that the virus affected the nerves in his ear and face, preventing him from blinking, smiling, or moving his nostril on the affected side. He also shared that it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to eat.

Fortunately, the paralysis eventually went away. Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well, calling the situation scary and unexpected, but assuring everyone he would be okay and was grateful he was improving.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I was SO worried about Jamie Foxx! He was hospitalized in April 2023, and for a while, everything was super private, which just made me even more anxious. Then, finally, he talked about it in his Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, and it was terrifying! He said he was in Atlanta and got this awful headache, asked for an aspirin, and then… he just blacked out. He literally doesn’t remember twenty days! Can you imagine?! At first, a doctor just gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but thankfully his sister, Deidra, knew something was seriously wrong and took him to the hospital. They discovered he’d had a brain bleed that caused a stroke. It was so scary! He said twenty days after surgery, he woke up on May 4th… in a wheelchair! He couldn’t even walk! He had to go to Chicago for rehab and therapy, but he’s a fighter. He said he’s so grateful for all the prayers, and honestly, so am I. He really needed every single one, and it’s amazing to see him on the road to recovery. I’m just so relieved he’s okay!

I’ve watched that clip a million times and it still gets me every time.

While filming the series, she experienced a sudden, severe headache at the gym, followed by intense pain and vomiting. She quickly realized something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a life-threatening stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak clearly.

After a week, her speech returned, and she was discharged from the hospital a month later. However, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had grown, requiring a second surgery. This surgery was unsuccessful, leading to a major bleed and putting her life at risk. Doctors had to perform a more invasive procedure, accessing her brain directly through her skull.

Fortunately, Emilia is now fully recovered and says she’s “at a hundred per cent.”
