Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the long-running animated series Family Guy (currently in its 24th season), is a master of raunchy comedy. He’s also behind the Ted movies and the Ted TV series. The first Ted film, released in 2012, starred Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett and featured MacFarlane as the voice of Ted, a hilariously inappropriate teddy bear who came to life through a childhood wish. The Ted prequel series, set in the 1990s and now streaming on Peacock, follows a teenage John (played by Max Burkholder) and Ted as they get into all sorts of trouble. Season 2 of Ted, which premiered on March 5th, kicks off with a particularly wild adventure: an obsession with a phone sex line.
Before diving into the upcoming show, we already know what the future holds for Ted. A sequel animated series is in the works, picking up after the events of Ted 2, and will bring back Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried. Seth MacFarlane explained his decision to go with animation instead of another live-action Ted movie:
The idea for an animated show came about because creating this series is a huge amount of work. While it’s a half-hour comedy, it feels like a high-quality, single-camera show. People often don’t realize how much effort goes into each episode – it’s like making a small part of an Avengers movie every 20 minutes! This is due to the extensive CGI and the incredible skill of our animators, both here and in Melbourne, Australia, who work hard to bring this character to life.
What was great about doing an animated series instead of a live-action show was the ability to get incredibly busy actors like Mark Wahlberg and Amanda Seyfried involved. Because they’re so in-demand for films, they likely wouldn’t have time for a traditional TV series. But recording an hour of voiceover work was a commitment they could fit into their schedules. This allowed us to continue the story after the second movie ended.
Seth MacFarlane admitted he doesn’t have a firm release date for Ted: The Animated Show, estimating it might arrive in late 2026 or early 2027, though he jokingly said that guess was completely made up. He also discussed Season 2 of Ted with ComicBook, along with the show’s use of crude humor and the possibility of seeing unusual team-ups with fantastical creatures.
Seth MacFarlane Talks Ted Season 2
The second season of the show focuses on John’s final year of high school. Why is this such a funny and chaotic time in a young man’s life?
Seth MacFarlane hopes the show’s appeal isn’t limited to the senior year experience, as the first season was also strong. He remembers high school senior year being a time of increased pressure to mature, and the writers aimed to capture that feeling in the lives of the characters John and Ted, even though they weren’t quite ready for such a change.
Did you tap into any of your own previous teen angst or memories for material?
Growing up near New York City – actually in Hartford, Connecticut – felt a lot like the setting for the show, the town where John and Ted live. I also spent a lot of time visiting relatives in the Boston area, so I was very familiar with that whole part of the country, especially the way people spoke. It was amazing that for the show, we built a record store called Strawberries across the street from our set, and they actually filled it with real vinyl records! I used to sneak in there between takes, and I couldn’t believe they had actual LPs to look at.
The second season kicks off with a nod to Winnie the Pooh. If Ted were to meet another fictional bear, which one would be fun to see him joke with or have a clever, snappy conversation with?
Perhaps Little John from Disney’s Robin Hood could hold his own in a fight. I’m also thinking of a bear that appeared on the Hudson Brothers Variety Hour – it was always causing trouble! If you search for the opening of The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show on YouTube, you’ll understand what I mean. You won’t regret it!
