After 18 years, Gemma Bissix is back on EastEnders, and her character, Clare Bates, has some explaining to do.
In 2008, while living with Dot Branning, Clare revealed she hadn’t spoken to her stepdad, Nigel, for years. She explained that he disapproved of her past relationships and lifestyle choices when she was younger.
As it turns out, this was a lie, and the real reason was revealed in tonight’s episode.
Clare came to Albert Square after hearing a voicemail from her stepmother, Julie, and was devastated to find out that Nige was suffering from dementia. She was shocked that no one had told her sooner, and that his condition had worsened to the point where he needed to be placed in a care home.
Honestly, it really upset me to hear Julie say that when Nigel first left after getting his diagnosis, Clare completely ignored her pleas for help finding him. It sounds like a really difficult situation, and Julie felt totally abandoned when she was trying to reach out.

Given the ongoing tension between the women, Phil Mitchell encouraged them to avoid conflict, thinking of Nigel’s well-being.
At the hospital, Phil and Julie believed it was best to assess his condition before letting Claire see him. However, Claire couldn’t bear to wait and rushed in, only to be heartbroken when he didn’t remember her.
When Lexi Pearce (Isabella Brown) arrived, it quickly became apparent that the man mistook her for his stepdaughter.

Clare left the hospital feeling upset and let down, walking out with Julie. Meanwhile, Nigel told Phil he wanted to go to The Queen Vic pub for a drink with Barry Evans, who had passed away years ago (played by Shaun Williamson). Phil calmly helped Nigel back to bed, explaining that Barry was working that day.
Julie then had to deal with Clare’s anger, explaining she hadn’t reached out sooner because she was still upset about something Clare had done to Nigel. Years before, Clare had sold a wedding ring that belonged to Julie’s late mother, Debbie (played by Nicola Duffett), to a pawn shop.
Nige originally intended the jewelry as a gift for Clare’s daughter, Bella, and had to spend a significant amount of money to retrieve it. Julie pointed out that this could be her only chance to make things right.

Lexi overheard the fight and found Clare upset. They quickly realized they shared a painful connection – both had lost their mothers at a young age. Lexi then showed Clare a video Lola had made before she passed away.
Julie and Phil were surprised to find Nigel gone when they returned to the ward. Clare and Lexi weren’t responding to their questions, so it was obvious they had taken Nigel somewhere else.
Where have they gone, and how will Julie react to Clare’s irresponsible behaviour?
