Get ready for a nostalgic trip! The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, releasing in April, is packed with classic Nintendo villains ready to challenge Mario and his friends. The animated film from Illumination celebrates everything Mario, pulling inspiration from decades of video games for a fresh, big-screen story. Alongside new heroes like Yoshi and Princess Rosalina (voiced by Brie Larson), audiences will see plenty of familiar rivals causing trouble.
The upcoming Mario movie is taking viewers beyond the familiar Mushroom Kingdom and into exciting new locations. Featuring the voices of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black, the animated film hits theaters on April 1st.
All the Confirmed Villains in the Mario Galaxy Movie
Bowser

Bowser has been Mario’s main enemy ever since they first faced off in the original Super Mario arcade game in 1985. He was originally known for being huge and powerful, and for his ability to breathe fire. Even after 40 years, Bowser, the spiky-shelled King Koopa, is still causing trouble for Mario.
Let me tell you, Jack Black as Bowser in the Mario movies is a stroke of genius! In the first film, we watched Mario and Luigi team up and ultimately save the day, stopping Bowser’s scheme to take over the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnap Princess Peach. It was a classic good-versus-evil showdown, and Black really brought the villain to life.
The trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie showed Bowser in a new situation. Peach has shrunk him down to a tiny size and is holding him captive like a doll, but this hasn’t stopped him from wanting revenge on Mario and Luigi.
Bowser Jr.

The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will introduce Bowser Jr., Bowser’s son. Voiced by Benny Safdie, Bowser Jr. is determined to avenge his father and help Bowser regain his power, seeking payback against Mario and Luigi.
Bowser Jr. is a Koopa, just like his father, and is next in line to become king. He’s energetic and a bit of a troublemaker, and he always has a variety of weapons and tools handy. Even though he’s smaller than Bowser, he’s still quite strong and tough.
Bowser Jr. first appeared as the main villain in Super Mario Sunshine. He also played a role in Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and the new movie seems to take a lot of inspiration from those games.
Kamek

Kevin Michael Richardson is back as Kamek in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Kamek is a powerful Magikoopa who can use magic to move objects with his mind, create fire, and perform other incredible feats.
As a huge Mario fan, I was thrilled to hear Kamek is returning in The Super Mario Bros. Movie! It totally makes sense, considering he first showed up as Yoshi’s enemy way back in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island – and the movie marks Yoshi’s big screen debut. Over the years, he’s become a consistent villain throughout the whole Mario universe, popping up in games like Mario Kart, Mario Party, and even Super Mario Galaxy. It’s great to see they’re bringing back such a classic character!
Birdo

Yoshi won’t be the only dinosaur character in The Super Mario Bros. Movie; trailers have also shown Birdo. Birdo first appeared in a Mario game back in 1988 with Super Mario Bros. 2.
Although Yoshi and Birdo share some similarities, Birdo hasn’t always been a friend. She was originally a villain in Super Mario Bros. 2, known for shooting eggs from her mouth. However, she later became an ally in the Super Mario Bros. series, and there’s a good chance she’ll play a friendly role in the new Mario movie as well.
Mouser

A quick glimpse of Mouser in the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie confirms the appearance of this longtime Mario villain—and might suggest other classic enemies will show up too. Mouser, known for his sunglasses, first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2 and attacks by throwing exploding bombs.
In the game, he works for Wart, a frog and the leader of a gang who wants to take over the dream world of Subcon. In the trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Mouser was shown fighting Princess Peach, hinting that he’ll play a villainous role in the film, just as he does in the game.
Megaleg

Released in 2007, Super Mario Galaxy featured a massive new boss called Megaleg. This robot was built by Bowser Jr. and had three legs, each equipped with technology and traps to harm Mario.
Trailers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie show Megaleg appearing to kidnap Princess Rosalina, who then readies her powers to fight back. Unlike some other enemies, Megaleg appears to be a mech that someone pilots, rather than a robot that acts on its own.
T-Rex

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie features villains from throughout the history of Super Mario games, even including the T-Rex from Super Mario Odyssey (2017). Like typical dinosaurs, the T-Rex is a powerful and intimidating enemy, relying on its massive size and strong jaws to attack.
The T-Rex in Super Mario Odyssey can’t be defeated with regular attacks. Instead, players need to trick it into hurting itself. Unlike other dinosaurs in Mario games, like Yoshi, this T-Rex is designed to look realistic and intimidating.
The trailers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie suggest a role for the T-Rex, showing it roaring at Toad and Yoshi. Because players could control the T-Rex with Cappy in Super Mario Odyssey, many fans hope it will become an ally in the new film.
