DC Studios recently released a trailer for its upcoming sci-fi detective show, Lanterns, and it’s already sparking a lot of discussion online.
The show centers on Hal Jordan, a seasoned Green Lantern, as he mentors new recruit John Stewart. Together, they investigate a troubling mystery in a small Nebraska town.
Originally revealed in January 2023 as part of James Gunn’s plans for the new DC Universe at Warner Bros., the series Lanterns was designed to have a similar feel to the HBO crime show True Detective.
Many fans are surprised and disappointed by the new direction of the project, as it appears to be moving away from the classic, vibrant sci-fi feel of traditional Green Lantern comics.
People have been making fun of the first look at Hal’s costume. It’s a very dark, dull green and was shown hanging on a simple plastic coat hanger, which many found underwhelming.

The 2011 Green Lantern movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, didn’t do well with audiences or critics, and has since been distanced from by those involved with the franchise.
I’m really liking that DC Studios seems to be going for a more realistic feel with their new stuff. You can check out the trailer for ‘Lanterns’ yourself – it hints that we’ll get to see the full thing in August, and honestly, it’s got me excited!

In 2024, Chandler was cast as Hal Jordan after Josh Brolin, who was originally considered for the part, decided not to take it. Meanwhile, Pierre quickly became the top choice among fans to play John Stewart, boosted by the popularity of his action movie, Rebel Ridge, on Netflix.
Kelly Macdonald, known for her roles in shows like Line of Duty and the film Trainspotting, plays the town sheriff during the investigation. Nathan Fillion will return as Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern character he previously played in Superman and season 2 of Peacemaker.
Okay, so I’m really excited about this new project, ‘Lanterns’. It’s being made by some seriously talented people – Damon Lindelof, who blew me away with his ‘Watchmen’ series on HBO, Chris Mundy, the guy behind ‘Ozark’, and Tom King, a comic book writer I really admire. Actually, King’s work is the foundation for the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ movie too, so he knows his stuff. It’s a great creative team, and I have high hopes!
Lanterns is coming to HBO Max in August.
