In Marathon, you’ll spend a lot of time collecting gear, either playing alone or with teammates, and then testing your skills against enemies or other players. The bigger picture involves completing missions (called Contracts) for each of the game’s six groups, and ultimately, figuring out the secrets of the Tau Ceti IV system.
The game features Rewards Passes that, like those in games such as Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals, won’t expire. You’ll even be able to buy passes from past seasons. You unlock the pass’s content using SILK, which you earn by playing the game (though the Deluxe Edition includes a little bit as a bonus). If you want to buy cosmetic items, you’ll use LUX, but LUX can’t be used to unlock the Rewards Pass content.
The game also features a Premium Pass, but it only includes cosmetic items – things that change how your character looks. Bungie has repeatedly stated that you can’t buy an advantage with real money in Marathon. Even without buying the Premium Pass, you can unlock cosmetic items through the Codex. However, it’s still unclear if the Premium Pass works like the Warbonds in Helldivers 2, where you can earn enough in-game currency to get new items without spending any extra money.
Marathon is releasing today on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, and you can download it now. Want to know about seasons and what happens when they reset? Or just see what’s included in Season 1: DEATH IS ONLY THE FIRST STEP? If you’re just excited to see the game in action, check out the new launch trailer.
In Marathon, all players can get seasonal content like new areas and character customizations for free by playing. The game doesn’t give advantages to players who spend money, and any rewards you earn won’t expire. You can also purchase rewards passes from past seasons if you’d like, and you’ll unlock rewards directly in your rewards system.
