Whether you’d call Crimson Desert an action RPG, an open-world game, or a bit of both, Pearl Abyss wants to avoid setting expectations too high.
Will Powers, the PR and Marketing Director at the studio, recently spoke with IGN to address some confusion surrounding the game. He clarified that Crimson Desert is an open-world action adventure title, distinguishing it from the RPG comparisons people were making to Black Desert Online. He emphasized this point when discussing the game’s approach to its expansive open world and its protagonist, Kliff – a tough character with a good heart.
There are two main reasons for that decision. First, we already have a role-playing game, and it includes everything players are looking for. Second, attaching a specific genre label creates certain expectations and can confuse potential players about what kind of game it is. Since we’ve been evolving the game over time, we didn’t want to add to that confusion by using a genre that doesn’t quite fit what the game has become.
Crimson Desert is best described as an open-world action-adventure game. It focuses on delivering a strong experience with exciting combat, a vast world to explore, and a compelling story.
Powers emphasized that while the game takes ideas from popular open-world games, it will still be unique. The developers aimed to create an experience that’s both competitive with and different from other games in the genre, which is a significant accomplishment given how many open-world games there are.
It would be conceited for any game studio to claim they aren’t influenced by other games. It’s natural to draw inspiration from successful titles. However, we’ve reached a point where constantly comparing our game, Crimson Desert, to others isn’t helpful. We did need to make those comparisons initially, as people hadn’t had much chance to play it yet. But now, we believe Crimson Desert is unique – its combination of features goes beyond what you’d find in any single game.
This game really shines in what it offers. While you can still see influences from other games, I’m hoping it will become truly unique – something players can’t find anywhere else. It’s hard to say how people will react or if it will create a whole new genre, but all those inspirations have come together to create something special and a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
We’ll soon find out if Powers’ claims are accurate, but we’re excited about the potential for fun and adventure with Kliff when the game launches on March 19th.
