Netflix has a strong history with science fiction, launching some of its most popular shows ever. While Stranger Things is often the first sci-fi series people think of on the platform, it’s not the only one. In 2017, another series with three seasons debuted, exploring darker themes that some consider even more impactful than those in Stranger Things. Although a continuation of the original show hasn’t been announced, a new series considered its follow-up is moving from Netflix to HBO Max.
Though created outside the US, the sci-fi series Dark gained a huge following with its intriguing ideas and complex plot, much like shows such as Lost and From. The creators of Dark, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, are now working on a new series for Netflix. This show won’t be a continuation of Dark, but it will bring back some of the original cast, including Lisa Vicari. The new series, which doesn’t have a title yet, is based on a particularly unsettling book.
The Spiritual Successor of Dark

HBO Max is developing a television series inspired by the classic German fairy tale, Struwwelpeter. Originally known for its unsettling illustrations and disturbing stories about badly behaved children facing harsh punishments, the series will take a very different approach. Instead of focusing on children, the show reimagines the tales as part of a dark reality show centered around a federal investigator solving a string of gruesome murders.
The series Dark, as we discussed before, hasn’t been renewed for another season after its third season finale. Similar to Struwwelpeter, the show centers around children facing terrible fates as a town grapples with ongoing disappearances. The reason for these disappearances involves complex science fiction concepts, and the show explores very dark themes, which have contributed to its cult following. Although a sequel seems unlikely, fans who haven’t seen Dark should know that the creators always intended it to be a three-season story.
Even though Dark and Stranger Things have finished their stories, Netflix is still investing in science fiction. The Duffer Brothers, known for Stranger Things, are launching a new series, Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, on March 26th.
