Today’s movies are full of interconnected universes and long-running franchises, but the quality varies quite a bit. These franchises have grown because continuing stories with existing fans is a reliable way to make money. While some sequels are fantastic and even improve upon the original, many franchises struggle to maintain a consistent level of quality over multiple films.
Some fantastic movies naturally lend themselves to sequels, allowing their stories to continue. However, other films are best left as standalones. Often, continuing a franchise beyond the original diminishes its quality, with each new movie straying further from what made it successful in the first place. Although one disappointing sequel isn’t always fatal, a string of underwhelming releases can quickly ruin a franchise’s reputation.
7) RoboCop

The RoboCop series includes four films, but none of the sequels have matched the impact of the original. The 1987 RoboCop is a beloved sci-fi action classic, while the following sequels didn’t capture the same thoughtful themes and became increasingly disappointing. The 2014 remake was even less successful, proving to be a shallow, uninspired Hollywood production and highlighting the franchise’s overall decline.
6) Scream

The Scream movies were once highly regarded as one of the best horror franchises ever made. But after a disappointing fourth film, the series went on hold for years. While the recent Scream movies aren’t terrible, they haven’t been able to recreate the magic of the original, and each new installment feels like a weaker version of what came before.
5) Jaws

The Jaws series is a strange case in Hollywood. It began with Steven Spielberg’s highly praised 1975 film, and continued with three sequels: Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, and Jaws: The Revenge. However, each new movie lost the suspense of the original, quickly becoming a series of cheesy, low-quality shark horror films that didn’t resemble the first Jaws movie at all.
4) Hellraiser

The Hellraiser series began with Clive Barkerās highly influential film in 1987, followed by a standout sequel in 1988. Unfortunately, the series hasnāt been able to repeat that early success. Later films moved away from the originalās intelligent and unsettling style, relying more on jump scares and gore. While the Hellraiser franchise has produced 11 movies, itās generally considered to have diminished in quality since those first two installments, which is disappointing given its promising start.
3) The Hangover

When The Hangover came out in 2009, it was a huge hit, with people loving its outrageous humor and the talented cast. However, the two sequels werenāt nearly as funny. They tried too hard to be more shocking than the first movie, but ended up feeling like weak copies. As The Hangover Part II and The Hangover Part III were released, it became obvious that the original film should have remained a single, standalone story.
2) Taken

Liam Neeson had appeared in action films before, but it was the 2008 movie Taken that truly established him as an action star. While critics weren’t overly impressed with the first film, it proved popular worldwide, leading to a series of sequels. Unfortunately, each sequel was noticeably worse than the last, with critical reviews declining with each new installment. Though Taken wasn’t a perfect film, the sequels consistently diminished the quality of the franchise.
1) The Matrix

The Matrix films are hugely influential and have connected with audiences ever since the original premiered in 1999. However, the quality of the series has noticeably declined with each new installment. While the first movie is still considered the strongest, and the second has some good parts, they havenāt had the same impact. Many considered The Matrix Revolutions the low point, but The Matrix Resurrections ultimately confirmed a downward trend that began with the very first film.
