Super Mario Galaxy Movie New Look Officially Confirms Return of a Forgotten Villain After 38 Years

The upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie is diving deep into the history of Super Mario Bros. games for its story, even bringing in details that longtime fans may have forgotten or never known. Trailers have shown that characters like Princess Rosalina (played by Brie Larson) and Bowser Jr. (played by Benny Safdie) will have significant roles, along with elements and power-ups directly from the Super Mario Galaxy video game.

As a huge movie fan – and a Mario fan, naturally – I noticed the first Super Mario Bros. Movie really went for it with deep cuts and references only the most dedicated players would get. It was packed with fun little Easter eggs for those of us paying close attention, and it looks like this new one is continuing that tradition – which I absolutely love!

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Will Feature Wart!

A new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has excited fans, who quickly noticed a hidden detail: the character Wart! It’s unknown how important he’ll be to the story – he appears to be just in the background – but it seems likely Wart will make a brief appearance during the new Mario adventure.

You might be asking, “Who is Wart?” If you started playing Nintendo’s Mario games after the series moved to 3D graphics, you likely haven’t heard of him. Wart was the main villain in Super Mario Bros. 2, a game known for being quite unusual and memorable.

The History of Wart & Super Mario Bros. 2 Explained

When Nintendo released the NES in the mid-1980s, it was a huge success thanks to a fantastic selection of launch games, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, and Duck Hunt. By the late 80s, sequels were needed for both Mario and Zelda, and Nintendo decided to shake things up dramatically. Super Mario Bros. 2 completely changed how the game played compared to the original. Instead of running and jumping on a timer, players could freely explore levels in any direction. The way you fought enemies also changed – instead of just jumping on them or using fireballs, you picked up and threw objects. The game even introduced a new villain, Wart, an evil toad king, and a dream world setting called Subcon to explain the gameplay changes. While the story tried to make sense of the new mechanics, many players found the differences jarring.

Many fans consider Super Mario Bros. 2 a unique and beloved game that tested out ideas the series would later perfect. However, Nintendo returned to a more familiar style with Super Mario Bros. 3, adding some role-playing game features. Following that, the series transitioned to 3D graphics on the Super Nintendo, launching Mario into the expansive universe it is known as today.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has a release date of April 1st.
