Pedro Pascal’s Gladiator II Role Influenced Star Wars Mandalorian Changes

The movie Gladiator II influenced some elements of the new Star Wars film. Pedro Pascal will return as his character Din Djarin from The Mandalorian, and audiences can expect to see him in a more prominent role this time around.

Pedro Pascal always voices the character of the Mandalorian, but because the bounty hunter’s code requires him to wear his Beskar armor constantly, stunt doubles like Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne often perform the physical scenes. The new season, The Mandalorian and Grogu, features Pascal in the armor more frequently and also shows his face without the helmet. Pascal was eager to do more of the physical acting himself this time around.

Director Jon Favreau explained to Empire that it’s a challenge to show the Mandalorian’s face. Fans want to see it, but the character is defined by his helmet. The team is trying to find a way to reveal his face without breaking the established rules of the Mandalorian culture.

As a big fan, I’m really excited to hear that Pedro Pascal will be seen both in and out of the Mandalorian armor! Jon Favreau mentioned Pedro is a very physical actor, and they’ve upped the ante this season, showing more of him without the helmet than ever before. It sounds like we’re going to see a lot more of the man behind the Mandalorian, which I think is fantastic!

The Mandalorian and Grogu Is the Start of a New Era for Star Wars

The fact that Pascal actually performs as Din Djarin and Grogu on screen is significant for The Mandalorian series. However, it’s only one piece of a much larger shift happening within the Star Wars universe. The co-writer of The Mandalorian and Grogu explained that the film marks the beginning of a new era.

Filoni reflected on Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Episode VII), noting it felt very distinct from what he’d imagined. He explained that, ever since seeing Return of the Jedi, he’d been anticipating Episode VII, constantly wondering what would happen next. He emphasized that Star Wars is now in a new and different phase compared to the original films.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Brings an Overlooked Star Wars Era to the Big Screen

Set after the defeat of the Empire in Return of the Jedi but before the emergence of the First Order, The Mandalorian and Grogu follows the adventures of a bounty hunter named Din Djarin and his young protégé, Grogu. With the Empire gone, scattered warlords still pose a threat, and the new Republic relies on Din Djarin’s skills to maintain peace.

According to Pascal, Din Djarin’s new job with the New Republic allows him to continue doing what he does best – bounty hunting – but now he’s working on the side of good. He’s combining his skills with a sense of morality. When we first meet him, he’s driven purely by skill and his Mandalorian armor and beliefs. His bond with Grogu has softened him, both emotionally and figuratively – he’s becoming less armored – and is now motivated to fight for what he believes is right.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens in theaters on May 22.
