For decades, home video game consoles have delivered some of the industry’s most beloved titles. However, many consoles haven’t survived, and when they failed, great games went with them. We’ve put together a list of fantastic games that were originally released on these failed consoles – games that many players today have either never encountered because they weren’t released on other systems, or haven’t been able to play on their original hardware.
1) Alien vs Predator – Atari Jaguar

The Alien vs. Predator series has had several good video games, but the original Alien vs. Predator on the Atari Jaguar is often considered the best. Released in 1994, it was a first-person shooter that let players experience the game from the perspectives of the Aliens, the Predators, and the Colonial Marines. It’s praised for its compelling story, suspenseful atmosphere, and faithful references to the films. The game was a major success for the Jaguar, selling well and receiving positive reviews. However, because the Jaguar console didn’t last long, it’s now quite difficult to find and play.
2) Record of Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice – Sega Dreamcast

Released in 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, Record of Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice is a solid action RPG based on the popular Record of Lodoss War series. It offers a captivating story and enjoyable hack-and-slash combat. Unfortunately, the Dreamcast didn’t succeed commercially, and Record of Lodoss War: Advent of Cardice has never been released on other platforms. This means the only way to experience the game today is with a Dreamcast and the original disc.
3) Guardian War – Panasonic 3DO

The Panasonic 3DO wasn’t successful, and most of its games weren’t very good. However, one original title, Guardian War, is a surprisingly enjoyable tactical role-playing game. While it hasn’t aged perfectly, Guardian War was groundbreaking when it came out, using 3D animation in a way that was rare for the genre. It offered a fresh visual approach to tactical RPGs and was a great experience for fans of the genre. It’s packed with excellent strategy and other features, making it the standout title on a console that ultimately failed.
4) Panzer Dragoon Saga – Sega Saturn

Despite being overshadowed by the Sony PlayStation, the Sega Saturn was a solid console with some great games, notably Panzer Dragoon Saga. Unlike earlier Panzer Dragoon games which were action-focused, Saga is a full-fledged RPG. Though it aimed to rival Final Fantasy VII but didn’t quite reach that level of success, it remains a significant RPG from the late 90s and a fantastic addition to the genre. It’s become a beloved cult classic, but its rarity makes it hard to play – copies often cost hundreds of dollars.
5) Knuckles’ Chaotix – Sega 32X

Sega heavily emphasizes its brand, especially Sonic the Hedgehog and his well-known friends like Knuckles. That’s why it’s surprising that Knuckles’ Chaotix didn’t succeed on the Sega 32X – a device that boosted the power of the Sega Genesis. While Knuckles’ Chaotix is a genuinely enjoyable game in the Sonic universe, Sega hasn’t re-released it. If you want to play this fun platformer, you’ll need to find an original Sega Genesis, the 32X attachment, and a copy of the game itself.
