Ryan Gosling has crazy, stupid love for Harry Styles—kind of.
During the opening monologue of the March 7th episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by the actor from La La Land and featuring musical guest Gorillaz, Harry Styles—known for his song “Watermelon Sugar”—unexpectedly appeared in the audience, becoming the highlight of the moment.
Just after Ryan, 45, started speaking, he abruptly stopped and asked, “Is that Harry Styles?”
The camera focused on the Grammy-winning artist as the audience burst into applause. Looking surprised along with everyone else, Ryan asked, “What are you doing here?” Harry, 32, explained, “I’m hosting next week, and I haven’t been here in a while, so I wanted to come watch and get a feel for the show.”
Ryan said, sounding a bit anxious, “That’s really professional, I’m glad you’re here.” He added, almost to himself, “I just wish someone had given me a heads-up—a welcome.”
I’m so excited about Ryan’s new movie! He almost let the title slip – he initially said ‘Project Harry Styles,’ which honestly, sounded amazing! But then he quickly corrected himself and announced it’s actually called ‘Project Hail Mary.’ I’ve been following his work for years, and I have a feeling this one is going to be special.
He compared the film to both E.T. and Interstellar, then delivered an emotional speech – set to piano music – about what it means to be human on Earth, which he described as a fragile “pale blue dot.” As he spoke, the camera showed a former member of One Direction nodding along, clearly agreeing with his message.

Ryan suddenly stopped speaking during his speech and seemed confused about why his time was up. He jokingly asked, “I’m sorry, why are we talking about Harry Styles?” Harry, the singer, replied, “I have no idea, I’m just listening too.” Ryan and his wife, Eva Mendes, share two daughters, 11-year-old Esmeralda and 9-year-old Amada.
I was so excited to see Ryan Gosling being playful again! He was jokingly teasing someone, saying, “Hey, could you maybe tone down the coolness? It’s starting to feel like a little much!” It was a really fun moment and showed his personality shining through.
Ryan continued his speech, and the camera then showed him and Harry side-by-side on the screen.
“What’s happening?” Ryan asked, interrupting the conversation. “I don’t get why we’re seeing a split screen. Can we please get rid of it?”

Just as the audience started laughing, the camera smoothly transitioned, removing Ryan from the screen and focusing solely on Harry.
“No, that’s not what I meant,” the Barbie star explained. “You understand what I’m trying to say. Now, can we check what’s happening with camera two?”
As a huge fan myself, I couldn’t help but notice how much Saturday Night Live seems to love Harry Styles! During a recent show, one of the cameramen actually walked into the shot wearing a sweatshirt declaring his affection for him – it was a fun little moment that definitely made me smile and showed their support.
“Honestly, everyone loves Harry,” Ryan began, but he quickly abandoned his emotional speech, signaling to the stage crew to take away his prop. “Just get rid of that silly globe,” he said. “Take it offstage.”
For more reasons to heart Harry, read on…

Harry Styles was born on February 1, 1994, in Evesham, Worcestershire, to Anne Cox and Desmond Styles. He grew up with an older sister, Gemma, who was born in 1990.
The family settled in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, shortly after his birth, and his mother, Anne, recalls his first word being “cat.”
Styles described his hometown, a village of around 5,000 people, as both “quite boring” and “picturesque.”

In his memoir, Dare to Dream, Harry remembered being unusually upset—he rarely cried—when his parents told him and his sister, Gemma, they were getting divorced. He was seven years old at the time.
He admitted he hadn’t fully understood the situation at the time, but he was simply upset about his parents’ separation.
Des and Anne remained together for two more years, after which Des moved out and Anne relocated with Harry and Gemma to Northwich, a rural area in Cheshire. Later, when Harry was a teenager, the family returned to live in Holmes Chapel.
Anne and Robin Twist got married in 2013 after being a couple for more than ten years. Their son, Harry, proudly walked his mother down the aisle and served as best man at the wedding.

Everyone who knew him said Harry was a creative and outgoing child who loved being the center of attention – he was a natural performer, always putting on a show, even if it meant playfully running through a train station! He thrived in school plays, and listening to classic rock with his dad – artists like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Queen – really influenced the music he enjoyed.
Louisa Jepson’s 2013 biography, Harry Styles—Every Piece of Me, reveals that Harry’s first recording was of Elvis Presley’s “The Girl of My Best Friend,” made using a karaoke machine his grandfather gave him. As he grew up, he also became a fan of bands like Coldplay and artists such as John Mayer and Noel Gallagher.
Harry joined his first band around age 14, hoping to play the bass guitar. However, another member already filled that role, so he became the singer instead. The band, called White Eskimo, won their school’s Battle of the Bands, earning a £100 prize and their first paying job – performing at a wedding.
Anne shared with Now magazine in 2010 that her son has always been confident and outgoing. She said he’s been making people happy since childhood and that she always predicted he’d become a performer.

Harry earned a little extra scratch—£6 an hour—working at W. Mandeville bakery on Saturdays.
Simon Wakefield, his former boss, told the Mirror in 2013 that he was the politest employee they’d ever had. Wakefield recalled that customers particularly liked Styles when he came back to the shop to film scenes for the movie One Direction: This Is Us.
Wakefield explained that the shop became very popular with young girls when Harry worked there – sometimes as many as twelve would come in at once. Even today, groups of around twenty girls occasionally visit and take pictures of the shop. Harry was a dedicated employee, handling everything from customer service to cleaning – he’d scrub floors, wash trays, and keep the entire shop tidy.

Anne was the one who ended up sending Harry’s X Factor application in when he got cold feet.
When auditioning for The X Factor in spring 2010, the 16-year-old confidently stated, ‘People – usually my mum – tell me I’m a good singer.’ He performed Stevie Wonder’s ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ without any musical accompaniment. He also explained that if the people who could help him pursue a singing career didn’t believe in him, it would be a significant obstacle to his dreams.
Harry didn’t advance to the final or even the second-to-last round for the boys, but the show’s producers decided to keep him around.
It was a pivotal moment when Simon Cowell and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger – who was standing in for Cheryl Cole – decided to put Harry together with Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson, all of whom were trying to become solo artists.
In the 2013 documentary One Direction: Going Our Way, Nicole Scherzinger playfully admits to being a key, though often unacknowledged, part of the group’s success. She describes it as capturing something special. Meanwhile, judge Louis Walsh is remembered for not recognizing Harry Styles’ potential.
It was Harry, however, who came up with the group’s name.
He remembered thinking the name sounded good when they were brainstorming. They tossed around a few ideas, and he honestly wasn’t sure where it came from. He suggested it, everyone agreed, and it just ended up sticking as the final choice.
Zayn explained on Phoenix’s Hot 97.5 FM in 2012 that the band initially brainstormed a huge list of potential names. Harry suggested the name they ultimately chose, simply texting it to the group, and they all agreed it worked. Apparently, Liam came up with some pretty awkward suggestions too. Zayn also remembered one of them being an acronym – USP, which stood for Unique Selling Point.

In October 2010, One Direction hit the X Factor stage live for the first time.
Even though I’m his mother, Harry is a genuinely kind person, and he’s presenting himself on the show just as he is at home,” Anne told Now magazine.
When Harry went to the X Factor house, I told him, ‘Stay yourself, Harry, and don’t become someone unpleasant. Remember, fame won’t change the fact you still have chores to do when you get back home, like emptying the dishwasher.’
Despite being naturally suited for performing, Harry began experiencing panic attacks before each live show, according to Alice Montgomery’s biography, Harry. He once even vomited in the hallway beforehand. Eventually, he found that drinking sparkling water and practicing deep breathing helped him calm down before going on stage.

Despite their later success, One Direction didn’t win The X Factor in 2010. They finished in third place, with Matt Cardle winning the series and Rebecca Ferguson coming in second.

Harry recalled his primary school years, telling biographer Louisa Jepson that he got along with both girls and boys. He wasn’t like some boys who disliked girls, and he considered himself friends with everyone.
Harry, the singer from White Eskimo, always had a knack for attracting girls, according to his bandmate Will Sweeny. Sweeny told the Daily Star that Harry had girlfriends as early as Year Four, when he was around 10 years old, and that it was amusing to watch him charm them throughout his life.
Louis Tomlinson jokingly complained to The Sun that the biggest issue with living with Harry was the never-ending parade of women coming to their apartment. He described it as “relentless.” Of course, Louis was dating Eleanor Calder at the time, so he was likely teasing Harry a little.
However, Jepson’s dad, Desmond, reassured him that his son was completely devoted when he was truly in love with someone – he only had eyes for that one woman.
Harry has always prioritized safety, especially when it comes to intimacy. He shared with OK! magazine in 2012 that he was worried about getting someone pregnant the first time he had sex, even though they had used protection. Thankfully, everything was okay. He believes it’s irresponsible to take chances with sexual health.

Following One Direction’s win on The X Factor in 2011, Harry Styles openly expressed interest in both 22-year-old Frankie Bridge from the group The Saturdays and 31-year-old Caroline Flack, who hosted The Xtra Factor, the X Factor’s companion show.
He confessed to having a long-time crush on Frankie, starting when she was a member of S Club Juniors around when he was eight years old. He even admitted to having posters of her and expressed a desire to kiss her. He also shared that Frankie and Caroline Flack were his favorite celebrities, finding both of them attractive. After the interview, he posted on The X Factor website, hoping Caroline Flack would see his message and say hello, calling her ‘gorgeous’.
Harry and Caroline first met in October 2011 at an after-party for a show at London’s W Hotel, and they left together. However, according to Alice Montgomery, nothing significant happened between them that night.
In her 2015 memoir, Storm in a C Cup, Caroline Flack explained that things started well with the person she was involved with – they were both unattached, enjoyed each other’s company, and had fun. However, she wrote that the relationship deteriorated once it became public. Initially, she described the atmosphere as lighthearted, noting that he had playfully joked about being attracted to older women.
Despite claims that she and Harry Styles were just friends, fans of One Direction strongly expressed their possessiveness over him. This led Caroline Flack to tweet that she and Harry were close friends and that he was a kind person, but she didn’t deserve the death threats she was receiving.
“Flack off, Caroline,” read a banner on display at a 1D concert.
The fourteen-year age difference between them continued to draw criticism from both the public and the media. “I struggle to understand why people find it so offensive,” Caroline Flack explained to Now magazine. “I don’t think it is. It’s odd to me that some people immediately focus on the negative. If two people enjoy each other’s company, why does it bother anyone else?”
As One Direction began to achieve global fame, they secretly stopped dating each other in early 2012.

In 2012, Harry Styles and the rest of One Direction appeared on an episode of iCarly. The band was scheduled to perform, but Harry jokingly pretends to catch “jungle worms” after drinking from Carly’s water bottle – right after a doctor tells her she might still be contagious. Even after he’s feeling better, Harry pretends to still be sick to get Carly to continue taking care of him.
After a bit of a scare, Harry recovers, and One Direction is able to perform their hit song, “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.”
This funny moment has lived on thanks to the internet, including a tweet from 2013 that revealed Harry Styles turned down a kiss from Miranda Cosgrove in the One Direction episode of iCarly.

Back in 2012, after Taylor Swift and Harry Styles met at the Kids’ Choice Awards, Justin Bieber told the Daily Mirror that a very famous artist had told him they thought Harry was attractive, but he wasn’t allowed to say who.
Harry told Seventeen magazine that summer that Taylor Swift was incredibly talented and a genuinely kind person. He really had nothing but good things to say about her.
I’ll never forget being at One Direction’s very first show at Madison Square Garden that December – it was insane! Harry was getting everything thrown at him, even an iPhone! For a little while, Taylor and Harry really were the biggest stars around. I remember being so excited when they were photographed on a date in Central Park, and then all the pictures from their quick trip to Harry’s hometown. Of course, it didn’t last – that Caribbean vacation ended with Taylor reportedly left alone on a boat, and it just felt like the end of something special.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Styles reflected on their date in New York City, saying, “Looking back at photos, I realize relationships are challenging no matter how old you are. It was even harder at 18 when you’re still figuring things out. It should have been a simple date – just two people enjoying each other’s company. It was definitely a learning experience, but ultimately, I just wanted it to feel normal.”
Harry Styles, discussing Taylor Swift’s songs widely believed to be inspired by their relationship – specifically “Out of the Woods” and “Style” – shared that he feels fortunate if their history contributed to those songs. He explained that those deeply personal experiences are the most meaningful, the hardest to express, and the topics he avoids discussing. He emphasized that these songs are about the connection between two people, and he intends to keep the full story private.
Asked if he had anything to tell Swift, he mused, “Certain things don’t work out. There’s a lot of things that can be right, and it’s still wrong. In writing songs about stuff like that, I like tipping a hat to the
time together.

Harry likes snowboarding.
In January 2014, a source told TopMob News that Harry and Kendall Jenner seemed to be enjoying each other’s company after they were seen together in Mammoth Lakes. Kendall later described Harry as a “cool” friend at the American Music Awards in November 2013.

Harry also likes swimming.
That marked the beginning of a years-long, ambiguous friendship between Styles and Jenner, taking them to various locations including Southern California, Anguilla, and St. Barts.
Harry Styles hinted in a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone about a relationship after Taylor Swift, possibly with Kendall Jenner. He explained that sometimes he likes to subtly reference an ex in his music, and other times he dedicates an entire song to them, hoping they understand it’s a personal message.

Any photos circulating over the years that seemed to show Harry and Louis – or “Larry,” as fans nicknamed them – kissing were not real.
Harry Styles clarified on the Australian show Sunrise that a photo of him and Louis Tomlinson appearing to kiss was altered. He pointed out that the picture, which was in a magazine, actually included another woman in the shot.
Louis explained that this had happened to him and Niall too. He described how, when someone is being targeted, people will often isolate them. He thought it was a surprisingly effective tactic.

Harry was the one who brought up the idea of One Direction taking a break back in 2014, while they were recording in a studio in London – it reminded him of the Beatles.
We didn’t want to overwork our fans,” he explained to Rolling Stone. “It would have been easy to just keep touring, but we respected our audience and the band too much to do that. We knew we’d burn out, and we didn’t want people to lose faith in us.

His bandmates were on board, and Zayn, who was dealing with anxiety and problems in his relationship with Perrie Edwards – fueled by tabloid rumors of infidelity – took the initiative to leave One Direction in March 2015.
After Zayn Malik left One Direction, the remaining members announced in August that they would be taking a break. Their final concert was held on October 31, 2015, at Sheffield Arena in Britain, which was a sad night for their many fans.

After Zayn Malik said One Direction’s songs weren’t very cool—specifically, that he wouldn’t put them on while trying to impress someone on a date—Harry responded by keeping things polite and avoiding conflict.
Styles told Rolling Stone he was saddened by the situation, but he always wishes the best for people pursuing their passions.
If you’re unhappy with something, it’s perfectly okay to switch gears and do something you enjoy. I’m happy for him that he’s pursuing his passions, and I wish him all the best.

Oh my god, he said he didn’t even want to write just stories for his album, Harry Styles! He wanted to write his stories, you know? Like, things that actually happened to him. He said the most important thing was being totally honest, because he’d never really done that before. It’s just… so real, and I’m obsessed with knowing what those moments were!
That being said, the game was on when it came to figuring out what, or who, he was singing about.
Harry explained that he intentionally keeps his personal and professional lives separate. He believes this helps him maintain a sense of balance and stay grounded. He doesn’t do it to create a persona or prolong his career; he simply wants to feel like himself when he’s not working, like he’s back in school. He feels it’s important to keep those two parts of his life distinct, and he genuinely enjoys the contrast between them.

The songwriter explained to Rolling Stone that the song is told from the perspective of a mother experiencing a difficult childbirth. She’s informed her baby is healthy, but she doesn’t have much time left to live. The song captures those final five minutes as she urges her child to live a full and successful life.

Harry Styles is known for his good looks, and his hair is a major part of that. Back in 2017, British Vogue took a look at his getting-ready routine before a Paris concert and discovered he used seven different hair products, along with Tom Ford perfume, a Diptyque candle, and Sunday Riley face oil.
Vogue beauty editor Lisa Niven playfully pointed out that Harry seems to have the skincare routine of a professional beauty editor, praising his choice of Ouai hair products and especially the Sunday Riley oil. She also joked that including a Diptyque candle in his requests is something anyone would do.
Only a few million people noticed he’d gotten a haircut before he started actively promoting his music again.
He told Vogue he initially felt vulnerable after shaving his head. He explained that the decision wasn’t difficult, and his hair was ultimately used to create a wig.

It’s a fact that Harry has six nipples – the usual two, plus an extra set of two located just below them.

When Harry Styles was in One Direction, he was known for his casual style – tight pants and wrinkled T-shirts. Since then, he’s completely transformed his look, now favoring sharply-fitted suits, stylish jackets, and other daring outfits. He’s even become a face for Gucci, starring in two of their advertising campaigns.
Harry Styles said Shania Twain was a major influence on both his music and fashion. He told Entertainment Tonight, “I think she’s amazing.”
Wait, what?
Growing up in the ’90s, my mom, Anne, loved playing artists like Shania Twain and Norah Jones, along with the band Savage Garden. Meanwhile, my dad, Des, was teaching me all about rock and roll at home.

Harry began pursuing his music while also starting his acting career with a role in Christopher Nolan’s epic World War II film, Dunkirk, released in July 2017. The movie was a critical success, receiving eight Academy Award nominations and winning three.
Harry Styles said that auditioning for Christopher Nolan was more difficult than auditioning for Simon Cowell. He explained on ITV’s This Morning that Nolan is intimidating because he’s completely silent throughout the audition, sitting quietly in the back of the room. Styles described it as a very intense experience, leaving him to endlessly replay the audition in his mind and worry about the director’s reaction.
At least he could rest assured that Nolan wasn’t giving him special treatment.
The director admitted they hadn’t fully grasped how well-known Harry was at the time of casting. While their children mentioned him, they weren’t truly aware of his popularity. Ultimately, they chose Harry for the role because he was a perfect fit and demonstrated his talent during the audition process.
Styles admitted that walking onto the set of a big-budget war epic was a bit intimidating at first.
He told The Big Issue that he was immediately struck by how large the production was. ‘You walk onto set on the first day and it’s overwhelming,’ he said. It was also a physically demanding experience, as he had to learn to stay afloat – quite literally – for his first film role.
One particularly intense scene involved Harry Styles’ character, Alex, nearly drowning. Styles told USA Today that filming the scene was genuinely frightening, as he was acutely aware of his limited breath-hold. He recalled being asked about his swimming ability the day before filming began, noting they pushed him to his limits. He joked that they seemed to be testing how long he could swim before actually drowning.

And…he’s funny, too.
In 2017, Harry Styles was everywhere promoting his music, but he also proved he could host The Late, Late Show when James Corden was unavailable – he even mastered American-style political comedy! He filled in again in 2019. Interestingly, years earlier while looking for a house in Hampstead Heath, he lived with Late, Late Show executive producer Ben Winston and his wife, Meredith, for almost two years, sleeping on a mattress in their attic.
He was away a lot, being a major pop star, but still.
Styles admitted to being too intimidated by Meredith to ever have guests over, but Winston countered that Styles wasn’t always solitary. He described a stream of famous visitors who’d either stay in the attic or hang out with them, always careful to avoid talking shop. Styles, Winston noted, would act as if his recent performances for crowds of 80,000 in Rio de Janeiro hadn’t even happened.
In 2017, while performing as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live with Jimmy Fallon as host, Harry Styles playfully impersonated Mick Jagger. Later, in July 2018, he appeared on The Tonight Show and jokingly told Jimmy Fallon he’d love to host the show. Fallon then pretended to faint, and Harry playfully took over as host, sitting comfortably behind the desk.
Styles returned to SNL as host and musical guest in 2019 and crushed it.

CBS’s show Happy Together, which marked Harry Styles’ debut as an executive producer on American network television, wasn’t renewed after its first season of 13 episodes.

As a lifestyle expert, I always admire when success translates into giving back! After wrapping up my tour in July 2018 – we did 89 shows and sold nearly a million tickets – we were able to donate $1.2 million to various charities. This was thanks to a portion of the tour proceeds, plus generous contributions from Live Nation and the GLSEN PRIDE campaign. It’s amazing to see how entertainment can make a real difference!

I was absolutely thrilled when Harry won his first Grammy! It was for “Watermelon Sugar” back in 2021, and it felt like the start of something incredible. Then, just two years later, Harry’s House swept the awards – he won Best Pop Vocal Album and, unbelievably, Album of the Year! I remember being so moved when he accepted the latter; he said it didn’t happen to people like him often, and you could just feel how much it meant to him. It was a truly special moment, and it cemented my belief that he’s one of the most genuine artists out there.

Harry’s accomplishments extend beyond his Grammy win. In 2020, he made history as the first solo male artist featured on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Beyond his own songs, Harry also co-wrote hits for other popular artists. He’s credited as a writer on Ariana Grande’s “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart,” and the song “Someday” performed by Meghan Trainor and Michael Bublé.

Most people know Harry Styles as a singer and actor – he even appeared in Olivia Wilde’s film, Don’t Worry Darling – but he considered other career paths too. He actually told Ellen DeGeneres in 2020 that if he wasn’t a musician, he’d love to be a florist.
He also thought about becoming a physiotherapist. He explained on BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show that he initially wanted to be a footballer, but wasn’t skilled enough. He then considered physiotherapy, but was told there weren’t many jobs available in that field, which led him to pursue music instead.
