Seven Years Later, One Classic Disney Animated Series Still Isn’t On Disney+

Disney+ started in 2019, and while the streaming service has added seven years’ worth of new Disney shows and movies, a popular classic series remains unavailable. The platform features a huge range of Disney content, from well-known titles to lesser-remembered projects. Surprisingly, a significant animated series from one of Disney’s most famous franchises isn’t included.

While Disney+ has a large collection of Disney classics, some popular titles are surprisingly unavailable. For example, you won’t find the animated film Make Mine Music or the popular crossover show House of Mouse on the service. Licensing issues also mean that even big Marvel movies like the Spider-Man series aren’t currently available. But perhaps the most puzzling omission is a show that viewers have repeatedly asked for.

The Aladdin Animated Series Still Isn’t On Disney+

Even though fans have been requesting it for years, the Aladdin TV show isn’t available on Disney+. The original 1992 Aladdin movie was a huge success during the Disney Renaissance, and the company quickly wanted to build on that popularity. They immediately began working on an animated Aladdin series to expand the franchise. However, the first five episodes that were planned were ultimately combined and released as the direct-to-video sequel, The Return of Jafar.

Following revisions, Disney launched the official episodes of the Aladdin television series in 1994. Alan Zaslove and Tad Stones, known for their work on popular Disney Afternoon shows like Darkwing Duck, produced the series. The show takes place during Aladdin and Jasmine’s engagement and follows their adventures with the Genie and friends. The characters frequently faced villains both in and beyond Agrabah, broadening the scope of the Aladdin universe.

I was such a big fan of the Aladdin cartoon! It was a huge hit, actually winning four Daytime Emmy Awards while it was on. It ran for two seasons – the first one had a whopping 78 episodes! Then the second season had eight more. It’s cool to learn that Disney usually only lets shows have around 65 episodes, but Aladdin was so popular they let it go longer. That really shows how much people loved it!

Beyond the standard episodes, Aladdin really shined with a crossover event featuring Hercules: The Animated Series – it ended up being a fan favorite on both shows! And the series didn’t just end, it finished strong. Disney released Aladdin and the King of Thieves as a direct-to-video movie, and honestly, it’s often hailed as one of the best Disney sequels they’ve ever done. It provided a truly satisfying conclusion to the whole Aladdin story, and I think fans agree it was a perfect way to wrap things up.

Even though Aladdin is a beloved Disney classic, it’s currently missing from Disney+. It’s unclear why, considering other related content like Hercules and the Arabian Night and all three animated Aladdin movies are available to stream. Some fans believe the cost of royalties for Dan Castellaneta, who voices the Genie, might be the issue. Others speculate that the Genie’s many pop culture jokes could create legal complications. However, other shows on Disney+ feature similar references without issue.

Unfortunately, the animated series Aladdin is no longer available on Disney+. This means fans can’t currently watch it, and the story remains incomplete on Disney’s streaming platform.

Unlike Aladdin, Other Disney Movie TV Spinoffs Are Available On Disney+

As a big Disney fan, I’ve been really enjoying how Disney+ is bringing back a lot of the animated series based on our favorite films! I was thrilled to find the whole Hercules: The Animated Series available, and the Little Mermaid show too. But it doesn’t stop there – they’ve also got later series like Timon & Pumbaa, The Emperor’s New School, Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, and Big Hero 6: The Series all streaming on the platform. It’s a great way to revisit some childhood favorites!

It’s odd that Aladdin isn’t available to stream, especially when so many other Disney TV shows are. Disney hasn’t explained why they’re leaving this popular spinoff out, and fans are left hoping it will be added to streaming services eventually. Until then, Aladdin fans will have to find other ways to watch the show.
