Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 9 – “300th Night”
The ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “300th Night,” featured a dramatic saucer separation, though with a different emotional impact than previous separations seen with the Enterprise starships. Directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Kirsten Beyer (based on a story by Beyer and Kenneth Lin), the episode reveals the surprisingly complex and ambitious plan of Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) to oppose the United Federation of Planets.
In the sixth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “Come, Let’s Away,” Nus Braka and the Venari Ral launched an attack on Federation Starbase J19-Alpha, successfully stealing highly classified weapons. Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) revealed that the Klingarite and his pirate crew made off with Omega-47 and the technology needed to convert it into mines. The Venari Ral then used these mines to effectively block off all of Federation space, creating an impenetrable barrier.
Captain Nahla Ake, aboard the USS Athena, traveled to the planet Ukeck – outside of Federation territory – to find Caleb Mir and a group of Starfleet Academy cadets who had gone off course. Their successful departure from Ukeck was short-lived, however, as weapons stolen by the Venari Ral from J19-Alpha crippled the Academy’s starship.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s Saucer Separation Loss Is Uniquely Tragic
As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I always remember a particularly tense moment from the Starfleet Academy episode 9. Captain Ake, completely surrounded by the Venari Ral, made the bold call to split the ship apart! The USS Athena’s saucer section broke away and jumped to warp, leaving the main body of the ship – the nacelles and Atrium – to face the Nus Braka forces. It was a really dramatic maneuver!
Although the USS Athena survived, the saucer separation in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9 was deeply upsetting because of what it represented. The Sato Atrium, a central and beautiful part of Starfleet Academy with its ponds, cherry blossoms, and memorial to heroes, has now fallen under the control of Nus Braka and the Venari Ral.
In the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Nus Braka targeted Captain Ake’s ship, the USS Athena, hoping to steal its warp drive. It now seems he succeeded, as the warp drive was likely left with the ship’s detached stardrive section.
Even more concerning, the circular area around the main body of the USS Athena houses the living quarters for Starfleet Academy students. Although most cadets are currently safe on Betazed, the pirate Venari Ral could easily invade these quarters and steal belongings from students and faculty.
Star Trek’s Movie Saucer Separations Had The Same Result
In the Star Trek films, the Enterprise was destroyed twice after its saucer section separated from the main hull. These dramatic events, and the ship’s subsequent destruction, were large-scale spectacles best suited for the big screen and required significant visual effects.
In Star Trek Generations, the USS Enterprise-D experienced a dramatic saucer separation, ultimately leading to its destruction and a crash landing on the planet Veridian III. This event is considered the defining example of how saucer separation can lead to an Enterprise ship’s downfall, and marked the loss of Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s first command.
In Star Trek Beyond, the USS Enterprise demonstrated its ability to split its saucer section from the main hull. After Krall (Idris Elba) and his drones severely damaged the ship, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) made the desperate decision to separate the saucer as a last resort.
Captain Ake angrily declared, “He won’t get away with taking my ship!” as she piloted it away. However, there’s a real chance the USS Athena could suffer serious damage, potentially losing its engines or central core. The best outcome would be Captain Ake recovering the engines and restoring the USS Athena by the end of season one of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but it’s unclear what shape the ship will be in after facing Nus Braka.
