42 Years On, Cult Fantasy Sequel Gets The Most Exciting Update Possible

After four decades, Masters of the Universe is finally back in theaters, and it feels like a new era for fantasy films. But Masters of the Universe isn’t the only classic making a comeback – a beloved sequel from a cult favorite franchise, which hasn’t been seen in 42 years, just got some incredibly exciting news.

Arnold Schwarzenegger recently shared exciting news with TheArnoldFans.com at the Arnold Sports Festival: Fox is developing a new King Conan movie! He revealed that Christopher McQuarrie, the director behind the last four Mission: Impossible films, has been hired to write and direct. If this is confirmed, fans could finally see a sequel to Conan the Destroyer after over 40 years.

What Is The Premise for the King Conan Movie?

Released in 1984, Conan the Destroyer was intended to be the middle film in a trilogy, with Conan the Conqueror planned as the finale. However, problems with contracts and negotiations led to the script being reworked into Kull the Conqueror instead. Although there were several attempts to make another Conan movie over the years, a third film never materialized.

I’m really excited about the new King Conan story! It sounds like it’s heading in a great direction. The premise is fantastic – it follows Conan after he’s been king for forty years, but something happens and he’s forced to leave. When he comes back, everything’s fallen apart, and it’s up to him to fix things, battling all sorts of dangerous monsters and enemies along the way. It sounds like classic Conan, but with a really interesting twist!

Schwarzenegger described the new Conan story as a classic tale of a king—Conan, who ruled for forty years—being overthrown and facing conflict. He anticipates a return for Conan filled with action, magic, and fantastical creatures, all brought to life with impressive special effects thanks to the studio’s large budget. He’s excited about the potential of these upcoming projects.

It’s been many years since Arnold Schwarzenegger last played Conan, and he’s now in his seventies. When asked about returning to the role, he acknowledged that the part would have to be adjusted to suit his age.

Schwarzenegger explained that when writing roles for him now, filmmakers need to consider his age. While he’s still capable of action, the way his character performs those actions will be different than when he was younger.

This project would be particularly exciting for director Sam McQuarrie. Years ago, during a Reddit Q&A, he revealed his long-held desire to direct a historical epic, even mentioning a script he’d worked on about Alexander the Great. When asked about working with Arnold Schwarzenegger, he jokingly added that he hadn’t seriously lifted weights since childhood.

The new King Conan comic appears to be following the storyline established by the first two Conan movies, but it won’t connect to the 2011 Conan film starring Jason Momoa.

The new Conan project currently has no release date.
